either way will be fine, those look pretty normal from what I have seen. If you feel like painting them that should be fine and if you don't they should be fine.
in tight spots like that, things get pretty limited...just don't get too pissed off and do something stupid...no matter how bad you want to you will regret it later.

can you get some visegrips or anything like that on the bolt...or even cut the head off? If you have a welder you could weld a nut to the end of the bolt and most likely get it off that way.
Might was well put new rob and main bearings in it, timing belt, timing tensioner. if you are going MHG you will need to get the block machined as well. Replace all gaskets and seals, not just the main seals. I would go ARP Studs not bolts...only a few bucks more but I think worth it. You could...
If the valve is bad or you bypass the entire heating system...either will not cause you to have overheating problems unless you have a leak somewhere that is allowing air in the system.
I have never had the need to blurp my system....I believe and I'm know I'm going to get flamed for this...but...
So what is the plan on getting this swap done?...as in time frame...I will gone for 2 weeks in 2 weeks so if you need some real help other then Mr. Heat Soak or Cutting Wheel guy You don't have much time left.
