if you look at the stock afm you will see that it also has a passage in it with a screw. most people don't ever touch it as there isn't a need to.
before the safc there was the gcc which did the same setup, the safc is more advanced and can do a better job of making fine adjustments.

you are smoking crack. heres the mentality behind the lex/550s swap:
lex afm = 25% larger than stock stock afm
550s = 25% larger than the stock 440s
it balances out.
