9/10 its timing. i did the exact same thing you did (complete rebuild/wouldnt start) before i realized the dist. shaft was one tooth to the right. turned it back a notch and fine tuned it from there after the car was running.
luckily it wasn't worse than that. i had a blazer cut a parking space too close and do the exact same thing in the exact same place, it fixed up nicely.
its easy to get the air out of the master cyl if you bench bleed it, but you'll need to re-bleed it at the four corners after you've disconnected the master.
i had to bench bleed a reman master cylinder and one that i rebuilt myself, don't know if youll have to do the same. seems like you might if you ever let the master cyl run completely dry.
throw it in a vise and use a #3 philips to push the piston, bleed it like you would a regular caliper (but...
iirc it takes a 36mm socket to get it off. check at harbor freight and pick up one of their deep impact socket sets to remove it (i had a bitch of a time finding one to fit)
