Guess what I just picked up for $160 @ the local Army Surplus store?

Yep, a 'long rifle receiver' as the guy behind the counter called it in as. :)

This thought of building my own rifle makes the engineer in me all giddy. :D Anyone have any links to good sources of ar15 parts, feel free to post them up ;)

Nice. I just put an order in for a Tactical Innovations lower. You'll be able to find anything you need on www.ar15.com

Doward...they are long rifle recievers. The only options on the 4473 form are...Handgun...Long Gun...Other(reciever, etc.). Even ARs fall under long gun.

Any range will dispose of ammo for you safely.

The sights on the FS2K are pretty basic back up ones.

The front is a post.. protected by the two rails you can see.. the rear is a flip up peep hole.. Nothing special at all. (This gun is completely designed for either a L3EoTech type sight, or other optics.)

Most likely, I will put the 3-9X40 that is on the M4 right now.

Or I might buy another cheaper one.. Or get the BSA Sweet .22 scope, put that on my Ruger 1022, and move the 3x to the Bushmaster, and the 3-9X40 to the FNH. (More likely what I will do, as I use my guns with scopes more than I do with heads up optics.. that kind of work really only takes a laser, and flashlight if you really get down to it..)

BTW, the forward stock on the FNH, has molded in cutouts to support a flashlight being installed in it. (Only a sander away from being there.) Also some companies are making replacement forwards that have rails and a place to put your left hand like the PS90. Or a standard forward post, you can get from many places, and with lights, lasers and other stuff. I'll most likely go that route.. a light for now.. later a forward handle, light and laser that can be put onto a pistol as well.

..And another people to be armed:

Me and my wife were at a party with about 5 other couples and some of the guys walked a few townhouses down. One of the townhouses is vacant, and there is construction being performed on it during the weekdays.
It is Saturday night.
Well, the door was open.
And there were keys in the door.
A ring of keys.
Keys that will unlock the rest of the doors in the neighborhood.

Naturally, we are calling the realty company's emergency line. This is bullshit! Not everyone in the neighborhood is armed.

I know your not supposed to change the locks.. but I have in a few places I've lived.. :) :)

Just look at the lock type. Go buy one just like it at the local hardware store.

Or you can also take the lock out, and take it to a locksmith.. for about 20.00 last time I did that, they will re-key it.. and give you the keyset and tumbler assy.. so when you move out, you just swap it back, and nobody is the wiser.. (And your mangement company can not get into your house easy.. Bummer for them.. never had a problem with them trying to get in anyway. But this way they can not just walk up and open your door if they want to without some effort on their part.)

Also, when I'm home, I safety latch all my doors. (Keeps small kids inside too, they can't reach the top lock/latch.)

But a loaded weapon is a good back up plan. ;)

Check your hardware store, when i re-key locks it takes practially no time at all and we'll usually do em for free if you ask nicely :)

I have the opportunity to pick up a sig p239 .40 S&W from a friend for ~$500. It's a little larger caliber than I planned on for a first firearm, but it would be quite a deal I think.

Anyone have advice for/against it?

Sigs seem to be a good reliable choice so I'm thinking I can't go too wrong. :dunno:

I was surprised when I took my Taurus 24/7 Pro 40 cal. to the range this weekend. It has less recoil than my friend's 9mm. I put 100 rounds through it and not a single jam. The only problem I had with it was when it ejected the shells I kept hitting the guy two booths down.

I prefer the .40 cal over a 9mm or .45 cal. With me being as skinny as I am I can handle the recoil without any problems. I agree and would suggest a .40 cal to any new gun owners. The only problem I have with big caliber handguns is too much penetration. Yea great you just put a big-ass hole through the person. What about the innocent by-stander behind them?

45 auto has less over-penetration and less recoil then the 9mm and 40 s&w

I've shot a lot of my friend's compact .45 's and they had more recoil. Could also have something to do with the frame design and the type of rounds you are using. I have the composite plastic frame and use 165 gr rounds.

To me my 24/7 Pro 40 cal. had less recoil than the 45 compact that I fired that day. And growing up in the Army I've shot full size .45's and they kicked pretty good. So you can't convince me other wise. The 9mm that I fired was some off brand name and felt like it was trying to jump out of my hand every time I shot. I love the rubber grips of the 24/7 Pro. I don't have very big hands and the ribbed grip feels nice. Which made double tapping easier.

Another reason I decided on the .40 and not the .45 of the 24/7 is that the .45 version has a design flaw with the magazine that cause the .45 to jam. The 9mm and the .40 versions do not have this flaw. And I basically stole my 24/7 when I paid $272 OTD (Out the Door) for a $400 gun because I know the owner of the shop.

That's why I carry a large frame .45

.230 grain doesn't kick bad at all with a big heavy metal gun.

I'm curious to find out what the recoil is going to be like on my USP. CC class is this weekend, after which I can finally take it home.

Next to nothing...seriously. USP's are one of the most manageable pistols out there.
