Yeah I seen that Tanya, I would still think it should be even farther down then that. Those tube get HOT. :)
BTW MA70 asked if you knew what material they are made of?
To me it looks like it would clear the distributor. I think the O-2 bungs look a little too close to the head though. I think they should be moved to the collectors farther down stream.
You only take off just what you need to to clean up the head.
There is a stickie that Ma70 put in the stickies on maintainance that has a lot of useful info, study it. Then if you have any specific questions post them :)
I had to spend many hours under mine cutting all the bolts, tried heat, big air impacts, Toyota dealer couldn't get them off. I did, and bought all new bolts, washers, everything I could replace. I had a few hundred in just bolts and washers.
Or if you can afford it go to a autocross, or better yet many road tracks have clubs you can join and they will teach you alot about your car and how not to push beyond your limitations or your cars. Alot safer. I like a few others that have posted in this thread, had done some stupid things...
Balancer is the crank pully, or the thingy on the end of the crank with the timing mark on it.

Are you sure about the timing of the cam gears in relation with everything else?
Some thing is wrong if you have to advance it that far.

Also check you firing order. And you injector...
You're going to have to find the vac leak first. Your timing if you checked it according to the TSRM with the jumper wire is too much advanced. Spec is 10 deg BTDC. Either of those can cause the problems you have.
I don't see any vac lines to the thermostat housing. And the vac hose you have...
