Could just be coolant dripping on the exhaust and blowing back. Take a look on the passenger side under neath the car and see if you can tell if it is leaking down on the pipes. You might want to check the rubber cap under the #6 exhaust, it has a habit of getting dried out and leaking at first...
You have to jack the motor up to get the oil pan off, which means taking the motor mounts loose. Not much fun on your back, but it's doable, I've done it.

I needed some time to gather all my "bullshit". You know "if you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit", or some thing along those lines. But I need some time anyway:)
To me it looks to be were the ring seals the cylinder, but dad has a better look at it then I do.:) Still wouldn't hurt to get it surfaced, you don't want to be doing it over again soon.
Can't tell from the pic. I'd say have the shop clean it up, they would be able to tell you how much they would have to take off to get the nick out, probably should get it surfaced anyhow, at least I would.
