I've been lucky. No surgery, just injections. Haven't had one in about two years though. Exercise and good posture are what's keeping me going now, plus a lot of Aleve. (naproxen sodium, if you're not familiar with the brand name).
You can make a great puller, out of a cheap 3/8 extension. I made a drawing of the one I made a while ago. All you need is a grinding wheel of some sort, and something heavy enough, with a hole big enough to go over the shaft, but not the receiver at the end. A large 1/2 in drive socket worked...
Hey! I just thought of a better method. Since it probably is pressed in, it might be better to use a large C-clamp, and a length of tubing as a receiver. 8, or 10 inch clamp should do. Just put the anvil of the clamp inside the block, on the dipstick sleeve, and put the tubing over the sleeve on...
Yeah, a cheap battery will work, it just won't last as many years. I only said cheap in case you were cash challenged. If you can afford it, get the most expensive battery on on earth if you want it.
This may be a little better picture of what IJ's trying to show you. The loop can extend deeper into the tank than what's shown in the photo, there just wasn't room to draw it on the pic. Though, it looks to me like, if you positioned the fittings correctly, you could do it without any cutting...
Use something that will not bend the piece. If you just try to bang it out with a hammer, you could deform it, and it might not fit through the hole. A roll pin punch of the appropriate size would be good, but just hitting it with a hammer could be bad.
