Changing Dipstick Plug

There is a metal cylinder that goes through the block to hold the dipstick and I don't know how to get it out to put it in my new engine. Have any of you guys had to change one? I was just going to beat it out of the block, but I didn't want to risk breaking anything.

Use something that will not bend the piece. If you just try to bang it out with a hammer, you could deform it, and it might not fit through the hole. A roll pin punch of the appropriate size would be good, but just hitting it with a hammer could be bad.

you mean that sleeve thats about an inch or two long? shouldnt your "new" block have that in it?

Sleeve that's the right word. Yes it should, but it doesn't so we have to take the one of the other block.

I used a hard plastic mallet to hit mine out.

I was under the impression it was pressed in so be DAMN careful HAMMERING it out...

Hey! I just thought of a better method. Since it probably is pressed in, it might be better to use a large C-clamp, and a length of tubing as a receiver. 8, or 10 inch clamp should do. Just put the anvil of the clamp inside the block, on the dipstick sleeve, and put the tubing over the sleeve on the outside of the block. Then, slowly screw the clamp on the tubing, and press the sleeve out. That would be much safer than hitting it. At least IMO.
