you can use reasonable force to detain the person until police arrive, and you can defend yourself if they attempt to assault you.
from reading through the thread, the broken leg came from slamming the door on his leg when the guy tried to get away.
if it was even possible, it would be nice to maintain the stock geometry while lowering the car, or maybe modify the stock geometry exactly how you want for your application.

curious why you installed the aerocatches in that direction? the instructions plainly state that the narrow end goes towards the front of the car, but everyone seems to install them like you did.
