well, if your like me, you will be imagining the beauty inside your engine while your driving it once you get it going. :p

I have 54 km on my rebuild so far, and I find that I am picturing the pistons flowing smoothly up and down in a well honed chambered while I drive.. its kinda nutz.. but thats how I roll.. lol.

Complete head.
Relapped one intake and 2 exhaust valves, and then did the shim-shim twostep.
I swear, adjusting valve clearance takes at least two tries per cam, no matter how carefully i measure.

Thanks, Super51.
I don't really yet think of it as a car. More like large groups of parts for 4 stages of building.

My man!!!!!!!!!!! That's the way to look at it. I'm the same way, you probably won't see crap for progress, but when you do it's done right.

Getting there...

Had a small setback yesterday.
After I installed the head, I installed my AEM cam gears and torqued them down. Tried to check rotation of the cams, and neither one would budge a single millimeter.
I started freaking out in my mind, wondering if pistons were hitting valves, etc. But as soon as I loosened up the cam gears a bit, I could move them again. Turns out that the back face of both cam gears was hitting the small bolts that hold the backplate on. I literally crushed the back sides of both cam gears. The guy who sold them to me(on Craigslist) said they were off a supra turbo, but there's no way.
If he was telling the truth, then they must have been off a JZ. Anyway, they're both useless now, and I had to order a new set of cam gears.

Next thing to do is clean the upper and lower intake manifols, and prep them for powdercoating. I also still have to helicoil the exhaust stud holes, and reassemble the throttle body.

I remember seeing something about the AEM cam gears not fitting properly on the 7M, the backs of the gears hit the rear upper timing cover bolts and the bolts either need to be shaved down or replaced with smaller heads...

Lol.
Why couldn't I have known this BEFORE last night.?
Maybe some button head bolts would have fit behind it, but I definitely want to run the backing plate.

Don't recall, to be honest.

Might have been the DNJ set from Rockauto.
They're listed as cylinder head plugs, which is a bit weird.

Awesome build, actually went through every page. So jealous wish I had the space and time to dedicate to my supra. Can not wait to see it running, subscribed.

Helicoiled the head up to 7/16" today.
taped up all the openings. LOTS of aluminum shavings to deal with.

Test fit of the manifold.

I had to port it quite a bit to match it up to the gasket(ports weren't even round).
Happy with the results

Ps- thanks GP. I appreciate it.
Some sorta good news/bad news.

The replacement of the backplate bolts with some buttonhead screws did indeed solve the clearance issue
with the AEM cam gears. Also, after taking apart the damaged gears, i found that the two depressions on each gear actually fell within hollow recesses between the adjustment bolt slots, and because it wasnt solid aluminum, it didn't distort the gears at all, and doesn't affect adjustment either. I need to take a couple pics to show what i mean.
The bad news is, that i have two new gears enroute, and now i see that i don't really need them.
I guess i'll be posting one pair or the other in the for sale section eventually.

New bolts:

Lol. Apparently, i was doing something wrong.
Too mush polishing reduces efficiency.

Anyway, as luck would have it, the cam gear seller emailed me, saying that he was out of stock on the silver cam gears, and issued me a refund, so turns out no $$ wasted after all.
