Foolish: I'm pretty good at reverse engineering things and figure if something can be done it's usually done using existing tech and procedures! ;)
(read pulling shit apart to see how it works)

Mine looked much like Pimp's on the previous page when I started!

JaV: LOL I find inspiration in the strangest places sometimes ;)

This is why I ask so many questions and like to look at pics as while I may not use the idea it sparks my brain into action!

i reused a 2.0mm mhg like 5 times. would still be reusing it but blew it at 18psi when the fpr when out and i went lean. going to reuse my current 1.2mm one as well. i scrapped the head and block clean with a razor. the mhg as well. then, i wiped the hg down wit ha rag soaked in acetone to get any residue off. then used a can of the spray copper gasket sealer and sprayed 2 very light coats on both sides of the mhg and let it dry a fe hrs. then when i was ready to install it i wiped the block and head surface down with a rag soaked in acetone again, to remove any residue. then put a tiny bit of ultra gray on the 2 front spots where the timing cover meets the block as per the instructions, then put the hg on and put the head on. i use arp head studs and tq them to 90ft/lbs in 3 steps. never had a problem and have done this on mine and several other 7m's.

I hate to dig up an old thread, but I'm having one hell of a time getting the coating off my HG. I've gotten most of it off from around the cylinder holes, as well as most of the coolant passages, but theres still big patches of it. The coating looks identical to pimptrizkit's. I've tried brake cleaner (3 different brands), letting it soak in a bath of mineral spirits, paint thinner, degreaser... nada. All those chemicals in conjunction with scotch pads and a fine brass brush. The stuff will not budge! ARG!!

What the hell am I doing wrong??

edit: also put it under my pressure washer for a sec, that didn't do jack either.

edit2: pictures at the end of this page: http://tim.thedugans.net/gallery/v/supra/rebuild2/

I've been going at it for a total of about 4 hours. The first hour made good progress, the last 3 have brought nothing. Pete and I were talkin about it, and I think I've got one of two choices... 1) buy new headgasket 2) give it a healthy coating with new sealant. Being as I'm a poor college student and rebuilding the head took some unforseen $$ from me, its going to be the latter. But as Pete said, there is a good side: "if you cant get the shit off with a scrubber/wire brush/chemical cocktail...its probbly not going to come off and cause a leak." How true!

Oh, its a titan 1.4 if that makes a difference.

You're going to have to use brake quiet, or something to that effect when you're done cleaning it anyways. The problem is, when the engine heats up, you don't want the viton coating to mix with the sealant you use, that can cause issues!

I have a can of copper gasket spray, would that work?

I've had the HG sitting in a bath of paint thinner for about 2 hours, and after more scrubbing, nothing more is coming off! UGH. Any other tricks, or just go with it?

COOOL!

I have AT LEAST one HKS MHG... if not a couple!

(Both had very low usage... just bought NEW with each head pull... didn't have SM to give me advice back then, but I STILL kept 'em, they are so clean!)

Thanks for the update on a resting thread... I'm finding little gems of info from such as these nearly EVERY DAY!

...time to file that in my cranium.:drink1:

Crisp: If they're Stopper's they'll be 4 layer instead of 3.

Update!

Just got done cleaning the Viton off my New Stopper (13km's old)

Seems that the Viton will set up harder in use this new one I gave it a quick soak in paint thinner and the Viton scrubbed right off with a stiff brush!
