brake cleaner is the way to go to remove the viton seal off the hg. I used about 4 cans on a rebuild a couple years ago and it worked great.

I disagree with the non-chlorinated Brake Cleaner being garbage.
The CRC stuff, yes.
Other stuff, no. The GM brake cleaner is non-chlorinated low VOC and it's amazing stuff. 12378392 is the number, and they should be able to give it to you for under $4 a can if you ask...

Ian, I checked with the partnering Chrysler dealership to the company I work for, and I can get that Mopar gasket spray for like $8 a can if you want me to pick one up for you just ask. I may need to find out what it'll take to ship that stuff... does shipping aerosol sound like it'll be a problem? yeah, i thought so...

Kurt: So far it's winning unless someone has a compelling alternative!

Foolish: LMAO I learn something new everyday!

A LOT of the gear we take for granted was science fiction when I was into cars the last time so the learning curve for me has been almost vertical!

well the head came off. of course i found oily residue on the head, block on on the mhg, i did a quick soapy water to the hg, and used a fairly clean shop rag?(no chunks looks clean, maybe wiped hands with once or twice,) along with break kleen to remove the oil from block and head, also soaked the hg with spray of break kleen between every layer, then when it dried, i sprayed 2 decent coats of coper gasket spray on each side, and allowed time for setting up between each coate, along with allowin set up time before installtion. head is back on and torqued, im prepairin the clutch to bolt this sucker togetha!

I reused an HKS gasket 3 times (not the stopper type).

I cleaned it with acetone. It takes off anything. Some brake cleaners have acetone in them but it's easier and cheaper to get a can.

I've used both copper spray and the copper gasket maker you get in a can and put on with a dauber. The second alternative is messier, but you get a thicker layer.

Either way it never leaked or blew.
