Don't bother trying to get Viton off with solvents, its very resistant. Mechanical is probably your best bet. If it was me, I would leave it on unless it is visibly damaged.

Viton® fluoroelastomer is the most specified fluoroelastomer, well known for its excellent (400°F/200°C) heat resistance. Viton® offers excellent resistance to aggressive fuels and chemicals and has worldwide ISO 9000 and ISO/TS 16949 registration.

The Viteron is like a white rubbery/latex coating? The spanish made mhg's i was using a while back were white and the layer would sort of roll up when i removed them (they never blew btw, just had to change the head, bottom end) I had sprayed them with hylomar. I would rub them with my finger and the viteron would roll up.

Mik: Nah the Viton is a black rubber coating that's bonded on pretty good!

Mike: "Scrubby"???

I'm 99.99% with ya on the Copper Spray unless someone comes up with something better between now and when I do the job!

I have reused a HKS gasket twice after the initial install. I blew two engines running lean, whatever :)

The engines had NO signs of leaking. They worked flawlessly.

However!

You NEED to inspect the metal HG you have very, very meticulously. When I took it out the last time and prepped it to use again, I noticed hairline cracks around the cylinder part of the gasket. The cracks were small, but more cracking, and that piece of the gasket had the potential to come apart in that area, which would NOT have been good. I beleive this came from the compression/decompression of the gasket.

I should take pictures of my gasket cracks for reference.

I would not recommend using a MHG more than twice.

when i did the head on my motor, i forgot to put RTV on those two points on the block. so i had to remove the head to do that. i used brake cleaner to remove the viton coating, and washed all that off with water, let dry, then coated with 3 coats of permatex brake quiet, made that HG nice and blue.

put it on, torqued it down, 1 heavy overboost, a lead foot, and 1 bad overheating later, no signs of a BHG. :)

Make sure there are no gashes to the HG, meaning no little pieces that scratch your fingers as you run over it. Make sure it is CLEAN, between ALL layers. I used carb cleaner to break down all the oil, then used a water/detergent base to get the rest of it. Flushed in between the layers with high pressure water, then dried it by hand. I used a green scrub pad to get off all of the material stuck to it. I laid it on a CLEAN, dust free work bench, and went to town.

I did all this work, and while I was bored one day I went to look at it closer because my gut had this weird feeling. That's when I saw the small cracks.

I have used copper sprays and such, but I doubt they do anything. They just make more sticky stuff you'll have to clean off if you change it again. At the pressures of a power stroke, anything soft enough to come out of a spray can isn't going to do jack. I sprayed three coatings on it, let it cure/dry. I then took my fingernail, and cut right through it so easily. You are only relying on the seal that the MHG in between the head/block generate.

I also recommend tightening several ft./.lbs more than the HG had on it before. You really want to get it to bite again. I was at 85 the first time, then went to 93 the second time on it.

I went cometic on my new motor, no sealing products needed or intended by the manufacturer, a dry install. Perfect results.

It's just for piece of mind, IMO. It is not a bad thing to spray the gasket, very cheap insurance for just in case. With or without it, I can't tell a difference at all.

This is an old 1998 MOPAR app note for installing a MLS in the field. Note the recommendation to use MOPAR gasket sealant. This may be an option to the copper spray. The sealant is still available.

SUBJECT: Multi-Layer Steel (MLS) Head Gasket Installation Procedures
NO: 09-05-98
GROUP: Engine
DATE: Nov. 6,1998
MODELS:

1995 - 1999 (JA) Cirrus/Stratus/Breeze
1996 - 1999 (JX) Sebring Convertible
1996 - 1999 (NS) Town & Country/Caravan/Voyager
1995 - 1999 (PL) Neon
1997 - 1999 (GS) Chrysler Voyager (international Market)
NOTE: THIS INFORMATION APPLIES TO MODELS WITH A 2.0L SOHC/DOHC OR 2.4L ENGINE.
DISCUSSION:
A new Multi-Layer Steel (MLS) head gasket has been developed and is being implemented into production vehicles. Additionally, it has been approved for service applications.

This new gasket will provide superior sealing characteristics, but will require extra care in its installation where a composite gasket was previously in place.

The following steps will assist service technicians in the proper installation of this MLS gasket.

blah blah blah

step 8. Spray both sides of the MLS gasket with a coat of MOPAR spray gasket sealant p/n 04318035.

IJ: I just threw it in there after cleaning it with break clean. but after reading several post's I think I might be buying some coper spray, and pulling the head tomorrow. I'd rather see this thing last then see me replacing the head gasket in a month...

the head and block are machined to spec,

the gasket the black coating was coming off around most of the cylinders..

I didn't clean between all layers and noticed oil residue squish out when tourqin the head..

so between all these things.. I really feel I should pull the head back off since it's not been fired just really sucks cause I have it completely assembled.. I guess I have to pull the turbo any ways cause it's junk cracks all around the wg I found this after pulling the stock elbow the other day, should have a used turbo courtesy of hotenessey (sp?) thanks allot!

3P: We don't have the Mopar brand here at all so finding that sealer here is going to be hard!

Pimp: Probably a really good idea to pull it and start again!

Some interesting info coming out of this thread thanks guys!

i guess im glad i went with my machinist's reccomendation of copper spray. He told me it helps with the heat transfer from the head and block and does some part in helping to seal the gasket to the surfaces.
Some food for thought coming from this thread.
