Today I got the pistons in my 89 7MGTE, and a few of the rod bearing clearances were about .01mm over spec, came in at .070mm, spec is .060 (from plastigaging). Should This worry me or is it close enough? Also, there is a little bit of blue coloration on the crank (the rough cast part by the rod...
There were no spun bearings on the crank, and no scoring. I had the crank polished at the machine shop, and he said that all the bearings should be standard size. I measured the last two bearing surfaces after I got the first large plastigage reading, and they were just below spec (on the loose...
I forgot that part the first time around, then measured the defferance and had another machine shop do it. Should be done now. The original shop can't clamp stuff that small in his mill.
How close do they have to be? is +/- .001 good enough?
Today I got the pistons in, a few of the rod bearing...
Nobody has said this, but i thought i would throw it out there, since many poeple think they are the same. VTEC (honda) is not much like VVTI at all.
Vtech has secondary pairs of cam lobes that operate secondary rocker arms, thus changing valve timing and lift/duration at ONLY one interval...
What a constructive way to discuss this. thanks for not being like many other silly people.
MLS gasket (cometic, 2.0) $170
ARP studs $119
Aisin Oil pump $145
Gasket set $71
Cometic bearings $77
Machine work (mill on head/block polish crank) $215
Oops. $797... 100 off
Everything was...
Check out the AFM device and the wiring to the O2 sensor. make sure the right readings are getting to the ECU....
You are running cold. One other thing to try is this:
Put premium in the car, and run the @#$% out of it before you go to the SMOG place. NOs will be high if you run hot, and...
Ok I have pics for everyone.
Got the stuff back from the machinist of course. He said he did an RA of 5. It looks like glass to me. Except he had to take .010 off the block to get most of the pitting out of it. there is still a little, but it is so minimal.
Painted the block, ordering...
I have dropped off a job that I could have EASILY done at a mechanic before. I had just installed an engine and it needed a rear main. So I took it to a mechanic, so i could work on my supra engine instead... lol.
I think that is a good price. But I am no expert on labor costs.
Good luck...
Let's say someone wants a turbo I-6 from toyota. And he is me... like he is.
He buys a rear-ended supra for $1300. Parts out a lot for around $600, and now has a $700 angine, tranny, and cool seats. Then he spends $700 on parts and machine work to attain a "new" bottom end, and a properly...
Is anyone checking this thread out still? I have a few questions.
Where can I get a cometic head gasket? I have only seen them on ebay.
I went to the machnist, he took .010 off the block and .004 off the head. but the head had been machined at least once before. he said there is probably a...
I should have my block, crank, and head back from the machinist in a few days.
I have a new aisin oil pump, and a full gasket set at my house right now.
The machinist said that my head has been resurfaced before, and it had some fire ring impressions in it, and so did the block. For these...
The whole "worn out lock and worn out key" thing is not really the whole story.
It is a "dirty lock, and any toyota key" thing. The dirt and junk in the lock will hold the pins in the open psoition after a bump on the key goes past the pin on it's way into the lock. Most keys will hit every...
I got the block and the crank to the shop today. Here is the breakdown:
$45 for runout inspection and polish on crank
$80 to deck the head on the block
$50 for a hot tank wash on the block
I also got the head torn down... mostly. I don't have a spring compressor, so I stopped there. I...
