I wish I'd chimed in on this, cause the Permatex Copper gasket maker works great on exhaust gaskets. I've used it so many times, and to great results. It would definitely have helped in this situation.

In my opinion, just about any engine you can get, that comes with a warranty of any sort, will be good enough to be able to rebuild it, if that's the road you're going to take. Just dropping one in as is, that's another story.
While I may be wrong about the Supra's bushings, a blanket statement like that seems wrong as well.
