My old head has stripped threads for spark plug hole #1 my question is my machinist tells me he can put in an insert and make it useable again however will it hold up to 450+hp without any problems? I wouldnt want to get my head all ported and what not and have a spark plug fly out of the during a hard run. Anyone have experiances with inserts? Please chime in

Thanks

No, helicoil isn't strong enough (and has other issues). Helicoil makes an insert for sparkplugs, but it leaves too much to chance.

TIME-SERT

Buy it, use it, don't even have to worry about it again. I've had to do it myself and I'll tell you what, the new threads are much more durable and easier to use.

PM me for more info if needed.

Do you guys think it is a good upgrade to do when the head is off? ( sort of like doing helicoils on the exhaust studs even if they didn't strip out)

That's questionable, though from what I've heard top fuel dragster's run em.

The nice thing about time-serts is they are removable with a reverse thread extraction tool (EZ out) and a new insert can be installed.

The main thing that sold it for me is that it's nearly IMPOSSIBLE to screw up. Even if the tap were to go in slightly off angle, the seat cutter still with cut the seat 90 degrees to the hole and the spark plug will seal.

I'm not kidding when I say YES it's expensive, but it's well worth it and I don't even worry about the repair!

Old School Cool
I've just stripped #6 spark plug hole (because I didn't use never-sieze, and I indexed them a bit too much).

I've already decided Time Sert is the ONLY way to go. However I'm trying to hunt down the exact thread pitch I need, that way there is absolutely NO animosity about what needs to be installed.

I know it's a 14mm spark plug thread diameter and a 1.25 thread per mm thread pitch.

We'll need the Deep Hole Kit 4412E AND the 44125 9.4mm .370" insert for WASHER SEAT as our plugs are NOT taper seat/shoulder. Also needed is Part 6020 sealer/locker (which is just Loctite 266) for the taper kits (even though we're using the washer kit, I'm still inclined to install it anways, don't want the insert even potentially coming out with the plug like heli-coils can).

The part numbers look wrong, but I'll have to look in the morning.

I will say that I didn't use the deep hole kit, though it's a bitch to pull the seat cutter back out.
