And I'll tell you that truck driver is 100% at fault. When driving big rigs you don't operate in the here and now, you operate in the future. Everything is looking ahead, and identifying potential hazards long before you get there. There are way too many "cowboys" out there who use the truck as a tool of intimidation. And that's not right when you are driving an 80,000 deadly weapon.
That guy should have slowed down, period.
True you look ahead, but when someone takes away what looks like clear sailing and slows down, your options are not the same as a car. Downshifting isn't always an option immediately and slamming on the brakes doesnt do much for you. For all any of us know he could have been slowing down, but too much brakes in the rain could spell disaster. Tap a car, or lose control of 80,000lbs. Both not good options.
I'm sure supracentral that you realize that things happen quickly and sometimes a you can make the wrong choice and something like this happens. You just don't know the circumstances from the truck driver... What if the truck driver says he gave him 3 car lengths then slowed down and 3 seconds later he tapped the car? It's a one sided story and you know that something like 80% of wrecks with semis are caused by cars. Not everyone realizes what a safe distance is for semis until one plows into there ass.
I was going down the freeway one day in my dumptruck, no trailer, no load. Clear sailing, no cars in front of me. Car lost control and cut across the freeway, another car pulls in front of me and slows down doesn't stop just slows, I slammed on the brakes at 60mph (dry pavement) and skid into the back of a car as it was still traveling 40mph. I was not found at fault.
There are those long haul drivers out there that are crazy though! I saw a couple coming down outta the rockies in montana. Fucking insane.
