Tell you guys a funny story.
A few years ago, I used to be out in the field, looking at wrecked cars and people all the time, so I had a camera in my vehicle always.
So, I'm going down this long hill into a wide valley just about 5 miles from town.
I passed these two semi trucks at about 80mph (it's posted 65 here...) and it appears I pissed off the lead truck since I got around him just as the road goes from two lanes down to one lane across the valley.
So, I'm cruising at 80mph or so to keep infront of this butt nugget who starts to tail gate me...
I come up on this lady in a minivan who's going 64.9mph or less, so I have to slow down as there is other traffic and I can't pass. Besides, I drive this road quite a bit, and there is a intersection coming up ahead, and it's not safe to pass here anyway.
Shit head in the Kenworth is RIGHT on my bumper. Like I can see the bugs in his grille, and I'm slowly backing off the lady in the van since she's slowing down too. (Ok, so the van driver and the truckers are both dumbshits but that's the situation I'm in at the moment.) I think she can see the trucks on my ass, and she's freaking out.
We come up to the intersection, and the road widens out so there are left turn lanes in both directions. By this time, I've pulled my camera out, and started to take pics of the grille of the truck on my ass. I just put the camera on the passenger seat, it's still on, and lens cap off...
So, what do the truckers do? THEY PULL OUT, Into the turn lanes, through a highway interseciton, with ONCOMING traffic and pass me and the lady in the minivan. So I grab the camera, avoid running into the back end of the lady as she nails the brakes and skidds off the road onto the shoulder and take some photos of both trucks passing me/her through the center turn lanes and manage to get one with traffic 3 wide. Me/her, the trucks, and a very wide eyed oncoming car...
So, now I'm pissed, and call 911 on the cell phone. They give me the run around, and we pull into the first town. We drive right by a sheriff who does nothing because the trucks now are just speeding, but not running anyone else off the road. I'm on the 911 call hands free the whole time following the trucks...
So, we leave town, and they kick it back up to 80+, I'm still on the phone.
I get another photo of the trucks passing a school bus full of kids in a double yellow area of rolling hills where you can't see what's coming ahead of you... I have to wait and pass the bus when it's leagal, so the trucks get away, but I quickly catch up... LOL On the phone the whole time, giving the 911 operator the play by play. (She's furious with the school bus pass, and she know's the road where they did it, so know's how unsafe it was.)
So, now we are about 30 miles into the next two small towns, before we get to the last larger town before there is nothing for awhile more. (remote area.)
I've got an appointment to keep, and can't keep chasing these guys all day, so the Highway Patrol finally pulled them over before the larger town...
Short story is the truck drivers are blaming me for everything, and say they will charge me with speeding if I press them on the illegal passing and tailgating... till I pull out the laptop, put in the photos and show them to the cops and the asshat truckers... LOL The cops just turned to me, said "can I get a copy of that" and then turned to the truckers and said "get your log books, you boys are going to jail..."
Dang funny, and it was worth the extra time that day to chase down those assholes. I've wished I had a camera in my vehicle all the time since. (Might not be a bad idea in cases like this, and how easy would it be with the low cost of cameras, and computers that could save it all to a simple hard drive in a used, cheaper laptop?) I've thought about it as security too, for door dings and parking lot encounters where people do nasty shit to you car while your not around.
