Just got home from Jeff's house. Man was it hot! I haven't got the energy right now, to post my pics. I originally was going to video it, but kotu didn't show up to be cameraman, and it was too cumbersome trying to do it while working, so we opted for photos. Bad kotu, no soup for you!

I didn't anticipate the flexibility issue, so it took us a little trial and error time to overcome it. Now that we have the exact method to do this, I would dare say it would take about 5 minutes, if you prepared everything in advance.

umm so basically its a compression check...

Similar but not quite. A compression test measures the amount of pressure a cylinder can create. A leakdown tester measures the percentage of air escaping from the cylinder. If you pass a compression test I wouldnt worry about it.

I want to apologize to everyone for some of the comments I have made in this thread. While I am pleased with the outcome of this project and proud of our accomplishment, thats no reason for me to post egotistical "I told you so" type comments. That is not mature behavior and I apologize to everyone who read them.

Well, I'll be damn ;)

I honestly didn't think it could be done in any reasonable amount of time. That is an innovative way of getting the valve back in place. Nicely done!

Jeff - Why don't you go here and post a detailed set of instructions on how to do this:

It will be a lot easier to search vs getting buried in this section over time. Only suggestion I would have is to feed rope into the cylinder once you have the valve back where it should be and turn the crank to secure it while getting back to the original objective.

Again, nice work...that will save a whole lot of work if someone does this.

Just wanted to thank everyone for helping me out with this. Its nice to have such a group of helpful folks. And a special thanks/hats off to Rayall and Lewis you guys are pretty much the shit for going so far out of your ways to do what you did haha! I'll keep everyone updated.....

.

That is certainly what we would have put in the DIY, jdub. There's no pics of it because Jeff isn't worried about that engine, and so we didn't go that far. I for one, wanted to get back to air conditioning.

Definitely. When we were finished we brought the piston back to TDC to keep it from dropping again.

You would have rope in the cylinder so you would never be in this situation, but seriously, if some one asked you to help them get a valve out of their cylinder you would rather pull the head than do this?

If an engine needs valve stem seals 99.9% it needs a valve job as well and sorry I don't half ass things ever it's just not worth it for me to work that way as you end up doubling up on the work sooner or later.

I wouldnt consider this method as half assing it, because the OP's original intentions were to just replace the valve stem seals, so this method is just getting him back on track with what he was doing before. OP's question was how can I get the valve back, not should I get a valve job, however i can see what your saying.

I hope your kidding, how would you get a hook down there? You know the diameter of a valve tem?

"IF" the valve stem is stil in the guide you can reach the end of the valve head THRU the spark plug hole - not thru the valve guide hole---
