I have owned msd and crane ignition systems and both were reliable, even in a high vibration off-road environment. I've seen poorly installed/wired MSD units fail. The HKS unit does not need any adaptors because it just uses transistors to switch capacitors to the coil primary wires to increase the dwell time. The MSD unit has it's own power supply and just triggers off of the stock ignitor but it makes a far higher voltage output. Also, multiple sparks at low rpm and longer duration spark at high rpm. I can understand how you may need several adaptors for the MSD because the adaptor just simulates a coil, but they did not mention it.
Is all this necessary? Probably not. But if that is the case then just about any mod on any of our Supras could be called unnecessary. All I know is that I popped my hood the other day and another 7m-gte Supra owner saw my engine with the 1j coils and said "what engine is that?" and I got a big smile on my face.
I have also been working on a circuit design to run a 1jz or 2jz ignitor on a 7m and another one to run two 7m ignitors with 6 individual coils. Both would be much less money then MSD or HKS.
