Someone at work today was talking about the Ammunition Accountability Act. Does anyone know when/if this piece of crap legislation will be pushed through and [hopefully] shot down?

The "Ammunition Accountability Act" is actually a variety of bills introduced in various state legislatures...it was never introduced in the US Congress. It's been out there for some time and has already been killed in all. It doesn't mean that it won't resurface in some form in the future, but for right now it's a non-starter.

I found this interesting as well:

Hmmm...create a "problem" that you just so happen to have a ready made "solution" for. At personal gain, of course ;)

Do any of you guys have any websites besides gunbroker.com you would suggest in dealing with for my search of a 1911 or AK. I know I want something cheap like a Rock Island 1911. Just a basic gun that I can upgrade and learn from as time progresses.

I think you are talking about "Rock River Arms". I don't know about their 1911, but I've heard nothing but good things about their AR-15.

As for AKs, I think they have gone up unreasonably in price since October. I got mine for $400, but saw the same model at the local range not long ago for $650. I haven't been monitoring prices since, but you know how supply and demand work. Supply seems low, demand is high. Expect to pay more.

Nah, Rock Island is essentially a renamed 1911 from the Philippines. They're cheap, and they shoot. I have heard about some reliability issues though and some difficulty getting spare parts.

Yeah Rock ISLAND. I wish I had the dough for a rock river. But again this is just for a first gun that I can take apart and see how it works and shoot the beeJesus out of. If somehting breaks, Ill get some cool shiney new piece from one of the higher quality vendors.

Where did you get your AK from? Im still trying to educate myself on brands of AKs. Lol It makes the whole brand thing a little harder to understand when they can be spread around some 7 different main countries.

Yeah I shot a SKS in the 7.62 chambering and it was a blast and was what got me started looking for the AK. Would you reccomend any of the other calibers?

I was also wondering how hard it is to change buttstocks, are they interchangeable between the fixed wood and an underfolding stock. Im not sure if I read it right or not but somewhere I thoguht I read that the recievers are milled differently to accomidate the different stocks.

I have a Saiga .308 and it isn't anything really super special as far as AKs go.
I haven't changed buttstocks yet, or messed with that. The AK can be a pain to shoot.
If the buttstock dropped down more and was shorter, it would be much easier and more comfortable to shoot IMO.

.45ACP? Because you love your 1911?
9mm? Its cheaper to shoot than the 45.
.338 because you love to be able to reach out and touch somebody?

Whats your favorite caliber and why? Handgun, Shotgun, or pistol.

Or whats your most reccomended caliber for in todays 'out of stock' and overpriced market?

I like the 9mm, because that's what my handgun shoots.

My personal fav handgun round is either the .357 Magnum or .357 SIG

12 gauge on the shotty, .30-06 or .308 in a rifle, or .223 for the AR.

Just my relatively inexperienced picks :)

.45 ACP for my daily carry and self defense. Reasoning: Subsonic, less chance of overpenetration, large wound cavity.

Daily Carry - Taurus PT-945

.308 for long range/general purpose. Reasoning: The .308 is easy to find. Has excellent ballistics and has won more bench rest competitions than any other caliber. And it's a hell of a lot cheaper to shoot than the .338 Lapua...

My current tac driver - CZ550:

For ultra long range, I love the .338 Lapua.

Already posted about it here:

What do you consider ultra long range? How far do you feel confident on tight groups with your .308?

6" group at 600 yards with the .308 is easy even on a bad day.

The .338 is for everything beyond that range wise.

All it takes is good firearm, good ammo, good technique and practice, practice, practice...

This is becoming more and more difficult with ammo prices on the rise. I was lucky enough to find some of my favorite target ammo for the 45 at $36/100box. That is the cheapest I have seen since November.
The same box cost $20 about 5 years ago. WTF happened? Ammo tax? Inflation? Cost hike of raw materials [brass, copper, lead]? Supply/demand games? It seems ridiculous.

you could easily take .308 past 600yards with some elbow grease...unfortunately I don't have such a range.

Ballistics start going south out there beyond that. It's not a matter of accuracy. It's a matter of lost energy.

At 600 yards the .308 has dropped down to under 1,200 ft/lbs, for comparison, the .338 still has 2,800 ft/lbs at the same range...

I may be practicing against paper but the reality is that to be deadly at ranges over 600 yards, you need a better tool than the .308

Hopefully at some point I'll be able to afford a Barrett M82A1 to finish my collection. If you ever hear me post that I bought one, it will mean my gun buying days are over, as that will be the one that I save for last due to it's over $10K price tag. With that gun I'll have insanely long range covered as well. That is provided the idiots in D.C. haven't outlawed ownership of them by then...

Barrett makes a more affordable version of the m82a1, just so you know. As much as I like to own a barrett 50 cal, I've been looking at the barrett .416.....
