Ok, showoff, tell us what it is... 308? 300 winmag?:)

.308 Winchester, the round that has won more benchrest matches than any other cartridge in the world.

I'm using Hornady 168 gr TAP FPD in it. Until I find the right handload for it.

I like .338 Lapua for the real long range stuff, but it's way to expensive to shoot on any sort of regular basis. At $4 a round it gets pricey... Pic below gives you a feel for how large the rounds really are:

That's a pretty gun. I figure I will start small and work my way up to that. Another problem is the lack of good shooting ranges around here and I have to go a ways up North to get somewhere to shoot. The shorter distance will still help teach me the fundamentals and will be more convenient so I don't lose interest.

Also, shooting a "light" round will help you learn technique. If you start with something large with some kick like a .308 or 7mm mag, a lot of people develop a "flinch" reflex because they anticipate the kick.

Practicing with a .22 will keep your technique right for when you shoot the big stuff.

Truer words never were spoken... or typed... whatever. And I hear you on the $/round deal. My non-supra baby is a modernized 1894 Swedish Mauser (actually produced in 1894). I love that gun. It's max range is only about 300 yards, but I've got a new/unfired barrel for it that I need to have someone put on that should push it out to about 350. I's only got a 4x Nikon scope on it, but I use it for hunting and it makes a sweet little combo.

I sighted my rifle in on 150g ammo but my hunting ammo I just got is 180g how much do you think I should adjust mu scope for the new ammo (its 1/4 moa adjustments). I don't have ready access to a range before I'm going out hunting or i'd just re-zero it in.

I know I should have sighted it in with a closer weighted ammo to my hunting stuff but I didnt have any at the time. Any info would be greatly apreciated. I was thinking about 6 clicks up on the scope for 100 yards.

What's the brand and type of the two different ammo's?

I probably have the ballistics charts for both that will get you close.

It's a .308 rifle 22 in barrel

Sighted in on Federal Power Shok 150g soft point

Hunting ammo is Winchester Super X 180g power-point

I'd use Win 165 gr ballistic tip vs the power point...much better ballistics. It has no problem with big game...I've harvested 5 elk using that round.
If you are hunting deer, the 150 gr Power Shok will be plenty, especially since you are sighted in with it. Shot placement is the most important thing, not the size of the bullet.

There was no power shok left at any of the gun stores in the area or I would have gotten more, our local stores are severly lacking on any ammo. And I'm going hunting for hog tommorow. Thats why I was wondering on just a rough estimate on scope adjustment.

I've got some 165g Federal Gold Metal Match ammo, but I really dont want to shoot a hog with a hollowpoint target bullet as It's probably going to take half the pig with it.

Real men hunt pigs with a pistol ;)
(.44 mag here)

I'd do a quick & dirty sight-in if I were you.

You should see the following approximate differences in bullet drop with your short range 100 yd zero.
|100 yds|200 yds|300 yds
Federal Power Shok 150g soft point|0|-3.7 in|-13.9 in
Winchester Super X 180g power-point|0|-4.6 in|-16.6 in
Personally I stick to 168 gr with my .308

Currently I'm using Hornaday TAP FPD:

Velocity (fps) / Energy (ft-lbs)
Muzzle|100 yd|200 yd|300 yd|400 yd|500 yd
3165/2446|2830/1956|2519/1549|2228/1212|1957/935|1708/712

Trajectory (inches)
Muzzle|100 yd|200 yd|300 yd|400 yd|500 yd
-1.5 |1.4 |0.0|-6.9|-20.9|-44.1

So judging by that at 100 yds I shouldn't have to adjust the scope at all. I'm still new to the whole balistics charts.

The best groups out of the 700 VTR I've seen have been shot with 178g A-max that were handloaded at 2400fps. the guy shot a .089" group at 100 yds

I'm nowhere near that good of a shot yet. But I was grouping about 4 inches at 200 yards my first time out the the range with this rifle. It's also my first center fire rifles so I was pretty proud of myself.:biglaugh:

Thanks to all for all the info. I got to sight it in before we went out so it worked fine, and we got one pig today so today was a success. Hopefully it will cook up for some good BBQ.

I finally paid for my sig 239 .40 in full the other day. Bought it from a friend's brother and got quite a deal on it. :)

I'm looking into laser sights. At this point, it's more of a curiosity than anything, but I'm wondering who has had experience with various laser forms for handguns. IE, laser grips, spring guide lasers,etc..

The spring guide laser is obviously less intrusive and more concealed, but I'm questioning the accuracy of them. As far as grips, how easily do they get bumped out of alignment?

I'm a beginner in about every sense so don't put anything past me. ;)

Thanks for any tips guys.

I really like the Crimson Trace laser grip design.

I just about bought a laser guide rod for my PT99, but at 3 bills and change, decided to keep that pistol iron sights, and as my .22 conversion gun, and bought a new M&P9 with the CTC grip.

So far, really like the M&P, and the laser is fun, and will work great in a stress situation. You basicly put the dot on target, and the bullet goes on the dot. There is some slight off target shots the closer to the target you get, but at that range, less than an inch off target is totally a non-issue.

I have it sighted in at 25 feet, as I never expect to use a pistol at ranges more than that anyway, and again, we are talking inches here at ranges beyond that, where bullet drop is going to become more of an issue anway than laser sights. (Basicly, the closer to the barrel you get the laser, the less of an issue this is.)

Just for fun, shooting accuracy with the laser is a hoot at longer range. (Keep in mind, this is on cheap Wolf ammo... ) You can really "see" the bullet drop on longer shots, but it's easy to get reliable hits on a 55gal drum at a few hundred feet, and keep the group to about 10" but you really notice any movement of the gun with the laser, so it's made me improve my grip, and style of shooting. (Any flinch, movement or shake shows up instantly with the laser, so it's actually a good training tool.)

That reminds me, I would like to get some sort of nice tactical laser/light for the USP. It seems that there are two categories here though:
1. Expensive
2. Less expensive, but "cheap".

I've heard nothing but good things about the EOTech sights. There are a couple people in the dept. that are using them and they all love them. I still have to order a light for it, and a couple 20rd mags. It comes with one 30rd mag but it's harder to shoot from the prone position with it, and I don't like the idea of having more of my head exposed trying to clear an obstacle. The 20rd mags though are harder to find than the rifles.
