Its a stripped lower. While in CA you must build it with a 10 round fixed mag. go check out coldwarshooters.net or riflegear.com and look at the prince 50 or the bullet button all these kits are is a modified mag release button so that the mag has to be removed with a tool or it is locked in place with a set screw.

Like I said in another thread, I have a 2 hour drive to either the ocean or the mountains and the weather/scenery is really nice here in northern california, no excessive heat/cold/humidity. But weve got a government with their heads shoved up their collective asses, its kind of a tradeoff. I have my AA and Im working on my bachelors in construction management, so for now I have a good job and college here but after I graduate ill probably be looking into moving to a free state. I really cant stand the ammount of librals here, especially on campus and within my family, I just had a heated debate with my father about socialized medecine. But in the circles I run with people are pretty cool, were all gun owners tend to swing more toward the right politically so it makes life here in the Peoples Republic of California a little more tolerable

.....sorry for the rant

I realized I never posted a pic of my gun.

Browning 9mm. I'm not sure if they make this model anymore.

I love it. It can shoot better than I can so far.

no money SC... If I had the money and a job waiting for me I'd be gone. Cali is a cool place. laws is what destroys it.

nice 9mm WhtMa71. I'm thinking on something similar soon if I can.

You might want to look at what it costs to live in other places. Without your crushing taxation, high retail prices and oppressive laws, you might find that moving somewhere else, even with a cut in pay is a better move.

When I left NY in 1992, I took a dramatic cut in pay and radically increased my standard of living. Cali is even worse than NY.

Take a place like Sacremento (since you are in northern Cal) and compare it to where I live:
|Sacremento, CA|Wooodstock, GA
Median Family Income|$55,277|$81,963
Family purchasing power|$49,934|$91,477
Sales Tax|7.75%|6.00%
State income tax (high)|9.30%|6.00%
State income tax (low)|1.00%|6.00%
Auto insurance premiums|$1,793|$1,602
Job growth % (2000-2007)|18.67%|47.13%
Median Home Price|$285,000|$166,200
Average Property Taxes|$2,423|$1,659
Colleges (within 30 miles)|7|30
Personal crime incidents (per 1,000)|12|1
Property crime incidents (per 1,000)|57|less than 1
Source: CNN Money - best places to live

If you tell me what city you live in, I could give you a direct comparison.

I'll bet I've got higher income, lower taxes, lower insurance, more jobs, cheaper housing and a significantly higher level of personal freedom.

I can run around with my insanely loud Tanabe Racing Medallion and open wastegate on the MKIV, nobody stops me, my limo tinted windows, nobody stops me. I run Kuhmo VitoRacer R-Compound racing rubber on the street. I don't have to worry about a cop popping my hood and writing me tickets for my blow off valve, my fuel computer or my blue silicon hoses.

I can legally carry my handgun just about anywhere except government buildings.

You folks out there don't realize how much your government is up your ass and how it effects just about every moment of your waking life.

I'll take a few more days of rain a year.

So I decided to buy a Remington 700 VTR in .308win instead of a hand gun. It should be at the gun store for me to pick up tomorrow. What kind of scope do you guys think I should get for it, I'm looking to spend less than 200 preferably. I was looking at the Leupold rifleman series of scopes.

bad news for your under 200 goal...

You'll want to spend at least as much on your scope as you did on your rifle

If you spend under $200 it will be JUNK. Trust me. JUNK.

As stated, your optics should run you at least what you paid for the gun.

Looking for some advice on buying my first firearm.

I'm interested in getting a long gun that I can frequently practice with to generally improve my skills and have some fun. Price is a major concern with both the initial purchase price and ammo cost.

Right now the consensus from what I have read is that a Ruger 10/22 would fit the bill.

Is there any information you guys can give me on this rifle? Are there any other rifles you would suggest for similar cost?

Lastly, does anyone on here know the Canadian laws concerning modifying this type of firearm. I want to know if I am restricted in terms of magazing size, optics, etc.

Hard to go wrong with a Ruger 10/22 - it's a good gun with a long history. It will be very cheap to shoot and it's a reliable weapon.

I don't know anything about Kanadian law, you'll have to get that info from some others.

http://www.cfc-cafc.gc.ca/default_e.asp is probably a good place to start.

The 10/22 is a great little gun. The one thing I'd recommend considering though is what you want the gun to do. If you was an easy reliable plinker for putting holes in paper or showing a tin can who's boss, the 10/22 is perfect. The ammo is dirt cheap so you can shoot for days on only a few bucks, and the gun is tried and true. It's a great buy for practice and a little fun.

If you want to do some small game hunting or verminting, the ballistics of the 22 short is a little lacking, and the power behind the bullet will leave you wanting for more. In that case, I'd recommend stepping up to a 17hmr caliber rifle like the Savage 17 Series. Price is a little more, but MSRP is still below $300. The caliber is a little smaller with but has more power, which means your effective range is increased (mostly because the trajectory is flatter). I haven't shot one of these myself, but a family friend has one and uses it for small-animal control on his farm. It should be about as pleasant to shoot as the 10/22, but the ammo is a little more expensive. The big benefit for this is that while you can still get good practice with it, it's a better caliber to take out in the field where the distance to your target is not going to be measured.

Thanks Mike. Great link. I found this in response to my previous question. Might be a good reference for someone else.

Q. What is the maximum number of cartridges that a firearm magazine can legally hold?

As set out in Criminal Code Regulations, some large-capacity magazines are prohibited regardless of the class of firearm to which the magazines are attached. As a general rule, the maximum magazine capacity is:

* 5 cartridges for most magazines designed for a semi-automatic centre-fire long gun; or
* 10 cartridges for most handgun magazines

A large-capacity magazine is not prohibited if it has been permanently altered so that it cannot hold more than the number of cartridges allowed by law. Acceptable ways to alter a magazine are set out in the regulations.

There is no limit to the magazine capacity for semi-automatic rim-fire long guns, or for other long guns that are not semi-automatics.

For local laws the best thing I've found is actually to go to a good gun shop and ask the guys that run it. Usually they're very up to date on what you can and can't do in your area.

Good plan. That would be fun anyways just to handle the guns.

I just looked up the Savage 17 Series and it seems they are only available in bolt action. Is this the case? I was kinda hoping to get a semi-auto.

You know, I'm honestly not sure. Semi's are great fun for blasting, though I'm partial to bolt-actions my self, so I really didn't think about it...

Remington makes the model 597 which is a semi in 17. Again, I haven't handled this one myself, but I've never had a problem with Remington, so I'd say check it out. MSRP looks to be about $200.

It really all depends on how/what you're going to use a gun for.

For target shooting at reasonably short ranges, a .22LR is kick ass. 75-100 yards max. Beyond that the high rate of bullet drop gets hard to compensate for.

If you like shooting out to 600+ yards like I do, you need something a little heavier, like my .308.

That's a pretty gun. I figure I will start small and work my way up to that. Another problem is the lack of good shooting ranges around here and I have to go a ways up North to get somewhere to shoot. The shorter distance will still help teach me the fundamentals and will be more convenient so I don't lose interest.
