Looks clean Jamie. Trying to keep it looking as stock as possible? Is that the reason for replacing the front cover?

I just don't like the look of a cut cover. I think it looks cheap and like a kid did it. There is no benefit to seeing the stock cam gears so they might as well be hidden. The engine bay will have a tough time looking stock after I am done with it. Right now I am searching around for a charcoal canister to remove the stock piece. Probably try to find a JDM one from a front cut.

New rad is in. Went with a Koyo because that's what I have always wanted and they just look sexy. Just need to figure out how to mount my fan to it. Just need to decide whether to replace my rad hoses with Samco stuff or not. I'm trying not to spend excess money at this point. They could always be done in the future when I am not a student.

Parts on order include a Lotec pillar pod and a turbo heat blanket.

Just waiting on my turbo to get here before I can set the engine into the bay.

Cooling troubles should be gone for sure. However, wiring troubles are just beginning. :(

This is my room from hell where I will be doing the wiring. It's a hell of a lot warmer than an unheated Canadian garage in winter time.
p1432769_1.jpg

I bought all of this used and I was not the one to pull it out of the car so I have been working backwards trying to figure out what all has to be changed on my wiring harness to make this work. The car it came out of was having a code 52 thrown and not running correctly. I have my knock sensors which I know work perfectly and I plan to do the rewire while I rebuild the rest of the harness. I also need to remove my FCD from my harness and wire in the MAFT-Pro. Doesn't look like it will be hard but it's another thing on the list and it all takes time.

This is nightmare 1. The electric fan setup. I first need to make a few brackets to attach the fan itself to the rad. Then I need to figure out wtf is going on with the wiring and temp sensor.

p1432769_2.jpg

p1432769_3.jpg

Nightmare 2. No clue why there are all these extra wires cut off on my boost controller harness. Will be looking up the install instructions and wiring diagrams when I get to this step.

p1432769_4.jpg

p1432769_5.jpg

Nightmare 3. MAFT-Pro extra wires. I'm sure this will all make sense when I start doing the install on my own harness but right now this looks seriously weird. A bunch of usused wires and ones that I don't know where they go. Fun time lie ahead.

p1432769_8.jpg

p1432769_9.jpg

p1432769_10.jpg

Nightmare 5. My old ass harness. It is greasy and stiff from age. Will be getting all new loom and some new connectors where necessary. The goal is to be able to install it onto the new motor and have clean hands at the end. I will be making a trip to the store this week to buy new wire strippers and crimpers.

p1432769_11.jpg

Nightmare 6. No clue what these blue wires are for as of yet.

p1432769_12.jpg

p1432769_13.jpg

And finally, the gauges I will be installing in the car. Not sure if I like the panel that was used previously to install these. I have ordered a Lotek pillar pod which will house 2 of them. The third I haven't decided yet. I will also need to order a new black gauge face to replace the silver face. They all need to match in colour even though the gauges aren't the same.

Isn't wiring so much fun <sarc> ;)

About as much fun as nailing my hand to the wall. I am going to hopefully borrow a TEWD for my year of car from a friend and spend some time learning about my wiring harness.

I might find it easier to check all the connections of the harness that came with the engine and use it. My concerns with this plan are the fact that his car had a code 52 and I don't know for sure if it was the sensors or not. It has had the rewire done but that doesn't mean it was done perfect. His car also did not have ABS and some other things had been deleted in the engine bay. I need to know if there are any connectors which would be missing that I would need.

At this point I don't really know which way to go and I don't have any time in the near future for me to go and figure it out.

Just got off the phone with the guy rebuilding my diff. Will be getting all new bearings and seals and a good condtion clutch pack from a donor 3.73 differential I bought. I originaly wanted to use the 3.73 ring and pinion but they weren't in good shape so I am staying with a 3.91. should be done and ready for pick up in a few weeks.

Moving along nicely. I don't envy your wiring troubles. I have wire loom that you can have and a decent pair of strippers if you want to borrow them. Let me know.

Thanks for the offer but I think I will buy a set of strippers. It's a tool I have needed in the past and will need again in the future. Might as well get one for the box.

I wish it were moving along quicker but I just plain don't have the time. I'm already tracing out wiring diagrams in class.

There is so much work to do and the nice garage weather in slipping away. It would be nice to get the engine into the bay so I can do the rest of it without opening the door.

Progress!

Got sick of doing school work so I went to the garage for a few hours. I installed a few new hoses and cleaned a few others. Installed a new CPS cover/bolts, and the knock sensors from my old engine. Changed out the destroyed transmission mount for one in better shape. Also put on the manifold spacer that I had a new stud welded to yesterday. Then I figured I would finally install something shiny. The IC seemed like a good choice so it is now in place. Had to cut the car a bit to make it fit where I wanted it but I am happy with the outcome.

I also picked up 6 feet of 1" x 1/8" Aluminum flat bar. This is the material I will use to mount the fan to the rad. Polish it up and it should look decent and I hope it will work well.

Fills the bumper nicely. Always wanted a nice front mount. :)
p1436278_1.jpg

Lots of room left for an oil cooler and possibly a power steering cooler. Not sure if I need a power steering cooler...
p1436278_2.jpg

p1436278_3.jpg

This spacer moves the turbo up and forward while also rotating it a bit. Leaves it in a nice position. It's also a good place to store the extra nuts. lol
p1436278_4.jpg

Bought a new cover from Toyota. It's pretty. :)
p1436278_5.jpg

Transmission mount from my old transmission. It was in 20 times better shape than what came with my new setup. Should probably get a new one but my pockets aren't that deep.
p1436278_6.jpg

This is under the FFIM. Replaced the knock sensors with the ones from my old engine. This new setup had a code 52 problem. I figured this was a good plan since I know my car wasn't throwing a code. I will do the rewire and worry no more.
p1436278_7.jpg

New 90 degree hose on the back of the head. I had to change it at an auto-x event once...never again. I also considered the new Mushimoto hose sets to replace the heater hoses. They look great but again, not made of money. Maybe in a year or so once the girlfriend is off my back about all this spending. lol
p1436278_8.jpg

Here is the new rad, fan and hopefully the mounting hardware.

Started doing more things today. I made some room near the intercooler to relocated the power steering reservoir to. Then I started to figure out how the lines work for the fuel and FPR. I also pulled all the dirty looking header wrap off the downpipe and will be rewrapping with fresh black stuff after I get the wastegate dump rerouted into the exhaust. Open wastegate is not for me.

p1437196_1.jpg

To make enough room I needed to move these lines. So I just flipped the bracket around and it got me the inch needed. Still a tight fit but after I make a few custom brackets it will fit fine and be out of the way.

Fuel feed line.
p1437196_3.jpg

Aeromotive FPR. I want to move it a little bit and recut the end of the braided return line. Looking kinda rough.

I'd say yes to the power steering cooler Jamie. Don't ask.:3d_frown:

Do you think it would be an issue for me though? I am in a slightly different climate. ;)

I also have my reservoir moved away from the heat in the engine bay to where it will get lots of airflow.

That's only trouble I've had when road racing. For the money it cost to replace my locked up ps pump would of been wiser to add the cooler. You've already addressed the brakes if I recall.

Yup, brakes are done but could use track rotors and pads to make full use of them.

Looks like this is something I will need to look into. Might not do it right now since bills are adding up fast and I'm but a poor student. I will look into it more when spring rolls around and I have a source of income again.

When I do add one I will probably make my current oil cooler into the power steering cooler and then go nuts with a proper oil filter relocation and thermostat controlled cooler.

Spent some money yesterday. Bought 100 feet of black header wrap and a set of coils and wires from an IS300. I figure if I'm going to have a FFIM I might as well make it look clean as hell while doing it. Now I don't have to ghetto mount the stock coil pack or run super long wires. I have also decided that I need a set of Samco rad hoses so they will be ordered asap.

Now I have to forget all these fun things and sit down to write a midterm report for my thesis project. Go 5th year of Engineering...take away all my fun.

Great build thread again, and plenty of updates. Also, you'll be thanking that school work when you are graduated and your income is greatly improved because of it. Just saying. :biglaugh:
