What will kill the shaft and bearings will be the PmoI as the shaft tries to slow and accelerate the larger wheel as you get on and off the throttle.

It's the diameter of the new wheel that causes this change and as this is set there's little you can do to "fix" it.

Ahhh, you & Allen are talking about the torsion increasing. I agree, but I think that most problems are due in large part to poor BOV's slamming the CT's to a stop or even reversing them. I hope for my sake that I'm correct.

With that said, do you or Allen have any advice for a decent turbo as I mentioned above?

I've killed modded Ct's just by having the torque of the exhaust wheel try to spin the larger comp wheel. The problem is that the Ct shaft is not constant diameter, and when it steps down to go through the thrust collar, it is a sharp machined cut, not a radius. That creates a week spot, and when that efficient (yes the Ct turbine is efficient) turbine whips the shaft around, the lazy compressor wheel will have nothing to do with it. It looks like you clipped the turbine wheel, which is a good thing for longevity. You lose a lot of low end efficiency by clipping, and that equals a direct reduction in the twisting force that the turbine can put on the shaft, basically it makes it so that the turbine can't over stress the shaft as easily. I'm pretty sure that the major reason people clip exhaust wheels is to prevent shaft failure, it just so happens that it also increases top end potential. That, teamed with your ball bearing center housing should really help with the life of that turbo.
-Would you mind snapping a shot down the oil hole so I can see into the bearing case?

I come from a land down under
Mark: Sorry no idea on a cheap fast spooling turbo!

I'm sure someone here has a clue though!
(I'd suggest a GT30R just not sure if it's going to fit your budget though)

Jake: Yep any sharp edge is just a "cut along dotted line" and will eventually fail!

I've tried a few times, but either my camera or my photography skills suck (probably the latter) & the picture doesn't come out.

My heart is set on a GT3540R, but that certainly not in my budget at this point since I don't want to half ass it. After I get my car back together I'm getting my bodywork & paint done, then I'll get the hot side set up to my likings.

LOL, my middle name is Allen, so I automatically spell it correctly & have to concentrate in effort to screw it up.:biglaugh:

Mark: Try the Macro setting with no flash and good back lighting!

I think I'd just get anything that will fit and be reliable if you have your heart set on a 3540 and just drive it until you can afford one as they really are worth the wait! :D

LOL, that's been my plan all along. :) While a 60-1 might not fit the reliablity catagory, it would be down right embarassing running my stock CT on my new motor. :nono:

yes but a fair few people have had major ct-26 death / seals and bearings not lasting with upgraded compressor wheels....

its a lot more mass then the stock wheel if you could bring it back closer to stock mass would be a good thing for turbo life and also spool quicker is my train of thought...

my 57trim ct has 35-40k miles on it. no problems so far. ive run it as high as 18psi. one day it pushed close to 30 cause i had forgot to hook the hose back to the boost controller, but that was an awesome 2nd gear pull till i noticed the gauge and let off. lol

btw, ive decided to go larger.

grab that and a 0.68 a/r turbine from precision turbo and the ebay mani, wastgate etc.. and youd be good. got my mani for $125 shipped and my 50mm wastegate for $120 shipped.

See my point now?

You can use a stock CT to square away the entire car getting it all debugged and sorted ready for the 3540! ;)

I've reached a compromise. I'm ditching the CT & going with a T4 & SSAutochrome manifold. Jon (MDC) & Ideal have weighed in with their opinions & advice too. Once I get my CT sold, I'll get a 57mm / .68 exhaust housing T4 from Jon. When time & money permit, I'll get the GT3540R & put it on using the existing manifold.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. :icon_bigg

It's official, I'm going with a T4. I'm getting it from MDCmotorsports. Jon gave me a fantastic deal on rebuilt turbo, downpipe, oil lines & a reworked the wastegate flangeon a SSAutochrome exhaust manifold. I won't give a price on it, but I will say that I'm floored. Jon has earned my business for a long time.

Hopefully I'll have pictures to post in the next ten days or so...

Also, I talked to the machinist building my shortblock. He's confirmed that it will be done no later than Wednesday, so that's a relief. My gasket set is in, along with my MAFT Pro from DrJ and my EGR block offs are being shipped. The only things I can think of that I need to get are my I/C pipes/elbow/bends (I'll have to order them once I get the motor in), some new flywheel bolts & the oil feed tube & union bolt.

I'm happy :)

Mark should be a member of the 400+hp crowd in no time!

And btw, I took the BB's out of the ct before it got sold off to Mark's buyer.

Mark was my guinea pig and I didn't want any one else with thier hands on it... yet.

...finished polishing the manifold.

Has anyone ever used Zoop Seal? Anybody have some left over they want to sell? :icon_bigg
