here are some of the misc vacuum pipes and the crap that I got out of them. I realize there are alot of custom setups out there where some of these or all of these would not be reused. But if they are, I would recommend blowing them out with compresses air to see if you get this mess. I took it one step further and sprayed brake cleaner into them to make sure. There is no sense in putting together a fresh motor and not going the extra step.
POOOOOOOOOPY!

I should spray my vacuum lines tomorrow while I got everything apart!
Good call!

looking good so far. did you use any type of cleaner or just the wire brush to clean all your parts?
I degreased all the part first with simple green and a little elbow grease. But the wire wheels and cup took all the haze and contaminated look away. With no cleaner. I am very happy with the results. Plus its something you can do yourself and not rely on someone with high dollar equipment that wants your money. A drill and some time is all you need.

Thanks hooked. And your right. That is why I go through all the trouble I do, cause the satisfaction you get in the end is all worth it! Its funny cause I was looking at some b4 pics I took of the motor after I pulled it, trying to figure out how some of these things go back together, and it was so nasty. Looked horrible. I cant wait to take an after pic and post it on here. Its going to be a huge difference. Updates and pics coming soon. I worked some more this weekend on it. Mainly trying to get all the bolts and studs back where they need to go and cleaned up. I degreased everything a while back but couldnt put all the rusted and just bad looking ones back with out some help. So I bought a wire wheel for my grinder and cleaned up every one of them. Took some time but it will be well worth it in the final pic. Bad thing is Im going to have to paint or clear them to protect them from getting that way again.

well I got a little more done today. First some pics of what I accomplished last weekend. Not really much as far as appearance. Cleaning up all these bolts are a chore. And then trying to remember where everything goes is another. Lucky for me I have another block in my garage right now to help me a little with this part of it. Im trying hard to get all the bolts and studs back exactly where they go.

and guess what I did today. Yep you guessed it. Cleaned up more bolts. I tried taking some pics of a couple b4 and after so the difference can be seen. I really looks better in person. I also used the hoist to take the block off the engine stand so I could put on the rear main housing. I have really been going back and forth as to what to dress the gaskets with. I ended up using permatex high tack. It comes in a metal bottle with a brush. It is this black messy liquid that you brush on to both the surface of the motor and part and the gasket, let dry a couple of minutes, and then assemble. It just seemed easier with the brush it comes with then using my fingers to smear regular gasket sealer on the gaskets. It resistant to about everything too. I hope it was a good choice.
I also posted a pic of the replacement plug for my crank. Word to the wise guys and a lesson learned by me. You should take out these plugs and clean. But I wouldnt clean out the holes until you get the crank cleaned up polished and balanced. The problem is you could have to replace a couple like I did, from bugaring up the head removing it. Then like me you will have an already balanced crank and have to replace a plug after the fact that doesnt weigh exactly the same. I had my wife take it to work and weight it and there is less than a gram difference. I called my machinist and he doesnt see a problem at all with that. Anyway removed the plugs and determine replacments or not, B4 you balance the crank. By the way. That plug is 1/2" with a pitch of 20 and the only place I could find it easily is Lowes. I used thread locker on them as a little added insurance of them coming out. Also just for comparison, my machinist told me a dollar bill weighs a gram.

Nice Work!

I noticed that the inner front timing plate is pictured seperatly from the block. Did you have the timing plate machined at the same time as the block?

Yes sir it was machined with the block. I also noticed something else this weekend when I was going to start assembling the front end. Go back to post #49. See in the pic the hole, above the crankshaft in the center. That is suppose to have a plug in it and it doesnt. My machinist forgot it. The only reason I knew is cause when I was trying to line out my gaskets, I noticed that there wasnt one that went in that area. So I took the timing plate off another 7m block I have in my garage and see that its plugged. I never noticed it before cause when I first saw this thing apart it was all greasy and nasty and just didnt notice which holes where plugged and which werent. This is the exact reason why I dont like being in a hurry. If I wouldnt have caught this, I would have had a huge leak not to mention I would be tearing down again with the motor in the car. I would have been HOT!!

Lets see If I can catch up here. I havent got a whole lot done since my last post but Im working a little at a time. I ended up having to order some new parts from the dealer. Like this one. I was going to clean it up and reuse it but im glad I didnt after I compared the two. Notice how the end that goes into the head is twisted looking. I thought this was how it was made. WRONG! Oh the part # is 90401-22004 and it cost me 8.99 locally. Probably cheaper through Champion Toyota

I spent alot of time on these plugs. It didnt seem like they would thread in as far as they should. Since I have had to chase alot of the threads already, due to the overspray of the sealer on the block they I assumed the same for these. I definitely want to post this info as I spend alot of time finding out this info. This is a 1/8 pipe thread but not NPT or standard. Npt is 27 pitch. This is british pipe thread which is a 28 pitch tapered. Close by no cigar. I had to spend $30 on a tap for this and it was not easy to find. Probably a huge waste of money just to chase threads, but its done now. The die was like $90, so I just spent $1.49 X2 for some new ones. Part # 90345-51006. I cant believe that so far anyway, these are the only two threads in the whole block that arent metric!! ugggghhhhh I also had to get the two straight pins that stick up from the surface of the block that the head align with. Part# 90250-08120 at $1.03 a piece

I put the water pump on this weekend and the oil pump last. I found that my gasket kit didnt come with some of the round copper gaksets. One is the lock gasket on the oil pump which I will have to order. I will post pics and part numbers when I get them. Also the gasket that goes around the union bolt two post up. So the oil pump install is not complete yet. I also put the Jtube which was also missing the gasket. I just reused the plastic spacer and some back TRV silicone.

thanks hooked. Its slow coming but its coming and yes I drilled out the J-tube. I appreciate you keeping me on my toes. I really should be farther along as im not even getting snow like you guys and have a good size garage to work in. But married with 3 kids makes it hard to dedicate time. Plus I had to work this past Saturday. :naughty:

interesting build... I will follow in your footsteps soon. All my parts are accumulated and most of the machine work done; but I have to take it back for a couple more things... in the meantime, I have done suspension and brakes, and the interior is out... and the car is in the body shop for paint...

Engine assembly within the next 3-4 weeks... no snow here... grown children... two car garage... no excuses. (I do have to find out what the j-tube is though).

good pics! thanks! they will come in handy soon.

David
sounds like you way ahead of me. Your car is getting the total package. and the J-tube is in post 55, the pic far right,of the block with the black thing attached. The jtube is the black thing. :naughty:

Well I havent got much done since my last post. I have decided to polish my head so I ordered a kit off of ebay. I also purchased a die grinder with a 3" extension that is pnuematic. From what I have read an air grinder is better cause you can control the speed with your pressure regulator on your compressor, where electric isnt as easy to control. I also found a thread where ARZ has come up with an upgrade for the oil pump so Im trying to be patient with what he comes up with as far as a kit. I also worked on my engine compartment today trying to get it cleaned up. i will post some pics soon of that. Its slow going, cause it tedious time comsuming work. But its necessary as I dont want to have a new motor in there and pop the hood to show someone and the fresh motor doesnt stand out cause the engine bay looks so nasty.http://www.supramania.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31378&goto=newpost
