I forgot to add a thank you to Chris (whenmunkysfly) for being an outstanding guy and coming over and giving me a BIG hand yesterday. I would've been lost without your help, tools, your company and most importantly, that sweet ass propane heater. Fuck it's been cold.
:)

Started cleaning up the block a bit today.

this was yesterday:

and today after I took a break for the rest of the day

I'm having a tough time with some of the left over crap from the gasket, as you can tell in the pictures. Any suggestions, tricks or tips are welcome that might help.

my assistants:

I need to go get some more brake cleaner. I really wish it didn't go so quickly.

So you found some of that gasket remover!
Just spray that stuff on there, let it soak for a good 15 minutes (don't let it dry) then carefully use a single edged razor (gasket scraper) or something to carefully scrape away the remainder

You're making great progress!

THIS THURSDAY, THE 4TH, I WILL BE PUTTING IT ALL BACK TOGETHER AND WILL NEED A HAND AND SOMEONE WITH KNOWLEDGE. If you can spare some time, I would be forever grateful, I've got a half day on thursday, so I'll be starting around noon. Call for directions! 425 275 7659

and a bit of an update:
got a bunch of hoses and gaskets today,
and dropped off the head at the machine shop and will be picking it up tomorrow :)
Waiting for the last bit of my gasket remover to get as much off as possible and for my dad to get back from schucks with another can of it.

^ i would go but i start winter quarter on thursday and the whole mountain pass thing is in the way.

Post up a high res pic of your whole engine bay maybe we can find some stuff that you can take care of now to save you some time.

assembly should be a breeze assuming you tore the engine down when it was top dead center to start with and marked the postion of your cps, you did do that right?

Yeah, no worries man, not expecting someone on the other side of the state to trek over just for this.
Alright, I'll look for one that I have and see if that will do, if not, I can take one tomorrow before I go to work, I'm pooped right now. I've been out there scrapping away at the block. Any tricks to getting the old gasket material off quicker? It's taking forever and killing my back and fingers. I'm using gasket remover spray and razor blades right now.

heh,
I just tore shit apart for the most part man. You're going to have to explain what the CPS is. Has to do with timing I'm assuming?
I did at least put all the nuts and bolts in baggies, labeled.

Haha, well it's not that difficult IMO...I did it for the first time with no prior experience in the middle of winter in the desert with the flu...late at night...lol

And the only problem I encountered was an intake manifold gasket (forgot to take all of the old one off, and had two on top of each other...:nono:

That, and a couple of leaks...make sure all of the seals and hoses are good so you don't have any leaks...

Yeah,
It really isn't, I only ran into a couple problems. Like you, in the winter, just went back to school and work and trying to get er done!

Yeah, I think I'll need to get a bunch of new hose clamps for all of this shizzz.

You don't need new hose clamps. just make sure all of the hoses are good, and are seated properly.

Did you have the head rebuilt or surfaced?

Make sure all sealing surfaces are VERY clean.

Lol...I went insane cleaning my block...after the twentieth cleaning I stopped counting...lol...I used lots of brake cleaner and simple green, and my block wasn't anywhere nearas dirty as yours...lol.

If they are those typical hose clamps with the worm gear, like you have for your intake and lots of other stuff, get new toyota clamps! If it takes a pair of pliers to squeeze the two tabs together to loosen it, they should be good!

Yea, the clamps should be fine if they are the spring type. If they are the worm clamps, I would get new spring ones, I have had several worm clamps work their way loose over time...they kinda suck.

And I Would replace any coolant hoses that you haven't already...or if it has unknown milage or is original.
