I have a warrant out for me? I don't suppose we have any lawyers here....

Okay, time for an update.

Still haven't heard from the attorney - getting pissed (me, as well as John).

Once he gets to Sumter County, he will be able to receive letters, and paperback books...but once he has finished reading the book, it becomes the property of the jail's library. Used bookstores are great places. :) Nothing can be taken into the jail for him, and currently, he can not even get anything through the Commissary (the jail "store"), because I haven't had enough time off of work to get money to him.

Still waiting on transport to Sumter, BTW.

Also still waiting to hear from the jail about getting my paperwork filled out (I filed a Power of Attorney for while he is in there, had no luck getting it, but now have to wait to get it filled out).

He is going nuts, and we are racking up quite a collect-phone-call bill. He isn't even allowed to use a calling card, since the message has to made clear that he is an inmate calling from jail. *sigh*

More later, after I hear something.

He was transferred yesterday, he is going to call me this afternoon with his information so he can get mail.

In the meantime - I'm selling his turbo, the PTE 67.

I am curious as to why you're selling the turbo. I mean, he is in jail now and I would think doesn't need it there. I feel disappointed for the fact that he has gotten himself in this predicament, especially after several members trying to help him out. I don't know what else to say really. :nono:

Duane, Im guessing they need the money on the OUTSIDE to help pay the bills while hes on the INSIDE.

It seems to me the lawyer is the one who failed miserably here. I would be asking for a refund of his retainer since it seems he did nothing helpful.

Because even though everyone on here was incredibly helpful, and we are unbelievably grateful for it, his attorney is a putz. John has been in for a week now, with no word from his lawyer. And John seems to be under the impression that just because he has an attorney, he doesn't/didn't have to worry about anything happening. He was being stupid when he got pulled over, and maybe after this he will pay more fucking attention to what people tell him, instead of only hearing what he wants to.

And yes, I have some anger towards him right now. :3d_frown:

I'm selling the turbo because I have about $2000/month due in bills (car payments, household bills, car insurance, etc), and only make about $1000/month. I am trying to find yet another job, but it is summer in a college town, with a country with a declining economy, and I am having no luck. So therefore - I am selling what I can to make sure bills get paid and I have gas and food, until I can find a third job, or even a full-time job.

More recent update:

He can receive up to 5 paperback books in the mail. He can receive letters, but not much else. His contact information is:

Attorney has been in touch with me a couple of times this week. Here's the thing. The judge in Sumter doesn't want to shorten John's sentence or give him work detail or a fine. Skidmore wants him in there for his full sentence time. Which is 59 days, unless he gets a "job" as a trustee, then it's 49 days. Polak, our attorney, is doing what he can, trying to get John out of there sooner, using college and John's job(s) as leverage, but it's not looking good so far.

If anyone on here is planning or thinking of sending John reading material, please let me know what you send. I am going to the used bookstore tomorrow to get a shit-ton of books to send intermittently, I will list what I get so that he doesn't get multiple copies.

What are his reading interests? I would think he would like thicker books than magazines to occupy his time, and make full use of the few books they will allow him to get. I've got a couple of paperbacks I could look through, but probably not any more than a week or two's worth, unless I get into my stash of import mags and old Mustang Monthly's from the 80's/90's and Hot Rods from then too. I'd be glad to send him some books, but want an idea what he wants. You don't need to go buying stuff to send with your budget, just send him letters to let him know you're there.

He isn't allowed to receive magazines, unless they are a subscription sent to the jail. Which I wouldn't waste the money on.

He will read just about anything you put in front of him. Fantasy, science fiction, mystery, thriller, basically anything that isn't religious or a romance novel. Some of his preferred authors are Tom Clancy, Clive Cussler, E. E. Knight, and Jim Butcher. He's found that he isn't so keen on Anne Rice's style of writing. I don't know how he feels about James Patterson, but I know he is a very prolific writer, and I thought about finding some of his stuff to send to John.

As for spending money on books...there is a really awesome used bookstore here that I LOVE, I only pay $0.35 per book. The guy that works there knows me very well, LOL. I have almost 200 books on credit, from all of the boxes I brought him when we first moved to Gainesville. :)

This is beyond fucked up, I hope to God he remains safe in there, and comes out sane. It sucks that he is being sentanced wrongly, and I hope that he gets out earlier than that time and nothing needs to be sold.

He's not actually being sentenced wrongly, whatever he might like to think. He was originally sentenced to 8 consecutive weekends of work detail, or 59 days of jail time. He didn't complete his work detail, so it reverted to the 59 days. It DOES suck that it took this long for us to find out what was going on, but the warrant was actually issued in 2003. Because Sumter is so far behind the times, it was only available county-wide, but they finally got connected with the rest of the state, so it went state-wide in March, when we found out about it.

As for stuff being sold.....no choice. I've already sold the Honda, the car he had been driving instead of his truck. I sold all of his video games, and his XBox 360 is on eBay now. The Wii is next, if I can't get enough hours to support myself. The turbo is still up for grabs, as well.

In 2002, I was arrested for driving on a suspended license. I had to do an 8 week long weekend work detail. I completed this, but have no record of doing so (as I've moved too many damn times since).

Now I am confused.

No, he never completed it. He thought he had, but he didn't. We have a copy of the letter he sent to the courts to "beg not to go to jail" so he could go to college.

John has a VERY bad problem with selective memory.

Many thanks for clearing that up Laura!
