Well im trying to piece together my next step. If its my rings/pistons ill prob do a basic bottom end buildup.

Option A: Most expensive
New CP pistons(20 over)
New ACL bearings
HKS head gasket
ARP head studs
New valve seals while im at it

Option B: Cheapest route

All new stock toyota parts

Option C: Moderate price

Toyota pistons(20 over if they make em)
Toyota rings
ACL bearings
HKS head gasket
ARP head studs

Of course machine work will be done in either case. I wish I can do option A, but my wallet says no. Since option b is a very cheap way, it might be the way I need to go, but with option c, it gives me a good HG and bearings, and I know that stock pistons are very strong so C is a very good option. I have some pondering to do

MK3(i know you have a 2jz but still...) + cheap route = going to break something. Id say Moderate route, it will probs suit your goals the best, and you will thank yourself and so will the 2jz :) good luck!!!

Well the cheapest route is all stock toyota parts, and thats by no means being "cheap"

First of all I wanna say nice build up and welcome to the JZ land ! 2jz no shit lol...
Looking good and it's going to be a bad ass car when it will be 100% ready.
A good 2jz swap costs serious $$$$...and you are throwing the money. Thumbs up on that!

To bad..and it really SUCKS the s**t that happened with the lost of compression on
the 3 & 6 cylinder. Damn,to bad you couldn't enjoy her....really that's bad luck!

Good luck on your build and putting back together a healthy 2jz motor!
Go STOCK 2JZ parts (pistons, rings, bearings, etc.),though this is not cheap like
someone said. Do not overbore anything (ex. 0.20"). Go STOCK!
Trust me on this...You want your motor to run for 100.000+ miles without any issue!
If my stock block ever 'blows up'...I will get a NEW TOYOTA block! .- The best thing to do.
I know it costs $,but if I don't have the money,I'll wait till I do and buy it at the end.
Let it be 2 , 5, or 10 months to get the money. It's an option to do that now.
Do the math. Stock new oem block goes for about $ 2.000. New pistons, rings, bearings,
gasket set, etc. machine shop work and laybour for block & head will end up a budget of
1.400-1500 USD if not more! For $600 bucks wait a month or two and get the new oem
toyota 2jz block. Imagine new everything down the block...perfect compression, new seals, gaskets,
water pump, oil pump, crank, rod, pistons, rings. The only thing you'll have to get is a stock or HKS HG
and some new stock or ARP head bolts (don't laugh, stock new head bolts are very good.Problem is
with 20 years old bolts/studs. They loose their moracular strenght and they get 'soft'....

I have done a 2jz (jdm aristo swap) 3 years ago,and now I am going single
turbo : GT72 DBB. I am almost done...Take a look on my build thread and you
can ask me everything you want. I will be glad to help you in any way....

Good luck with your 2jz project!

The tolerances on the new engine should still be checked on everything, its going to be a good 600-900 more just for the brand new short block so that is an option too. A set of pistons and rings from toyota is 560, vs 800+ just for the after market pistons. so they indeed cheaper.

im going with stock pistons, rings , oil pump, and head gasket. Ill be putting in new ferrera valve seals and ARP head studs. I will be running ACL bearings.

Does anyone know if toyota makes a different sized head gasket and pistons for the 2jz?

Man, reading what u did just make me want to swap a 2j. But i need to find a clean low milage shell. Sorry for the dead cylinders. Nothing is wrong with brand new toyota parts right? unless you're shooting for high hp. Nice build

Little Update:

I found that the Exhaust camshaft was broke right after the third lobe.
p1494392_1.jpg

I pulled the cam caps and I didnt see any signs of seizing or over heating. I did however find out that I had a leaky head gasket that could of explained the smoking I was getting.
So I pulled the head and Im going to send it to the machine shop along with the block to get work done.

Ill be putting new things in while the engine is apart:
Oil Pump
HG
ARP Studs
Valve seals/guides
Cams
New gaskets all around
Oil filter relocation kit

I always wanted to do a 2jz swap. I guess its true what they say about jdm 2jz's, good ones are getting harder and harder to find. I read your build and it seems like you didn't do anything wrong. I guess you just got an engine that was on its way out. I know how frustrating this can be, but soon enough you will have a fresh rebuild and a fast 2jz. Good luck on your build.

What was compression in the rest of the cylinders?

-Mike

150-155 cold. When the cam broke, 3 was partially open and 6 was fully open, so I guess that caused the lack of compression.

Yes good engines are harder to come by now a days. Its really hit and miss. And thanks for the kind words, I figured that if I completely rebuild the engine to factory standards that I will have a nice reliable engine/

Ok im just compiling a list of what I need.

Interior:
Boost guage
Wideband
Oil Pressure guage
carpet

Exterior
Alot of loving, prob a whole new paint job at some point

Engine:

If I can get away with a stock toyota HG ill go with it. Whats the max I can cut off the head/block and still run the stock HG?

Head:
Valve seals
valve guides
maybe new springs and retainers
cams
Im going with a shimless setup more then likely.

Bottom end:
New bearings(mains, rod, thrust)
Oil pump.
Maybe new rings and a hone. Can i just get the cylinders re honed and call it a day??????

Machining:

Checking if head is straight
Get the head and block surfaces decked/machined
crank polished
connecting rods polished
hot tanked and new freeze plugs installed.
Anything else I should do while its at a machine shop?

Hey guys long time since my last update. Well the engine is at the machinist right now and it turns out that I can use stock sized pistons and Hg. So im putting in new oem pistons and HG. Im putting acl bearings in and replacing all the seals on the engine. I should have the engine back sometime this week so I will post pics when I get it!

Just got caught up on this, nice work, loved the vids...ty. Sorry about the pistons, sounds like my luck. Just keep at it, you will be happy you did and once the 2J is all dialed in and done, you will have a instant-grin machine lol.

Well walked out to my car today to find it broken into. Ugh I cant catch a fucking break. They only took my head unit face plate but they busted the window. I have had a spare window forever so I just popped it in and everything is good to go.
