I believe there are only two ways to get relatively cheap horsepower out of the 7mge....
1. Nitrous
or....
2. Na-T
Other than those two, you really wont see a noticeable gain in power from other mods.
Yeah you have to be careful when buying those downpipes off eBay, many people have bought that downpipe thinking it's for an MK3 when it is actually for the MK2

There are cheaper ones, just Google "exhaust cutouts" and click the shopping tab and browse the ones they have to get an idea on the price it would cost to run the setup you have in mind
by cut-outs i mean something like this.. They can also be electrically controlled, so that with a flip of a switch you can go from open downpipe back to normal exhaust flow...
Since your in Cali like me I would suggest the recirculated DDP or DM Downpipe, unless you mind getting hassled, pulled over, and getting sent to a ref. The sound of the non-recirculated DDP is not worth it to me, if you like the sound that much just get a cutout and you will have a similar...

That is the reason why it takes me a good 4-10 seconds to take off from a red light, you never know when the next speeding idiot will come barging through the intersection.
Mine did the same thing, smoked on start up but while under driving conditions it was good. It turned out to be a blown head gasket...
I would start off with a compression test and go from there to source out your problem.
Check the igniter, I had a similar problem like yours not to long ago. A wire backed out of the igniter connector once i pushed the wire back in the car would start up fine.
+1 The wire going to that connector broke. It has been ran for a short period of time this way, though nothing seems off. Could it cause potential damage?
