There is a valve that's actuated by the pedal, when you release the pedal pressure it cuts off the assistance otherwise the brakes would never release, yours isn't working so the Vacuum keeps sucking.
If you're certain the Seals are facing the right way around it's Air, I use a Vac Pump and a 1 Man bleeder and rarely have a problem.
When you get some pressure if you hold you foot on the pedal does it sink to the floor at all?
I've had great success with the Walbro 400 series of pumps, quiet and move a LOT of fuel!

Who cares what they "Look" like.... FFS it's a Mk3 the only time they're visable is when they're on/up if the Output isn't as good as stock lights they're useless.. :nono:
Most of the structural parts of a Mk3 are pressed from thin gauge Hi Tensile Steel so YES there can be many negative effects.... :nono:
Not to mention 25 years of corrosion and seam sealer in the way...
