I have gotten 28 a few times on 400 mile road trips (actually have had more than 400 miles on the trip meter before deciding to fill it up) and have gotten as bad as 12 when I am purely driving the car hard. I would say my average is ~22mpg though.

I would say oil pressure is the cause of most 7M failures. My 100,000 mile motor hits the limiter semi often and runs like a top.

Is the ring gear the same part number or different? I think I will likely use my ring gear and pinion since they have worn together thus far and my stock diff does not make any abnormal noise currently.

If it started from push starting it is the starter. Check that you are getting power to the solenoid, and if you are I would check the solenoid since you are not even getting the click.

I pay close attention to the car (gauges and sounds) but there is no fear of going WOT. My car has been ultra reliable thru our first 20,000 miles together.
