Don't fret too much about the vacuum hoses. When I was putting my motor back together everything fell into place and it was pretty obvious where everything went. I only had to look at the diagrams maybe once or twice.
So was this motor recently "rebuilt"? How easy was it to remove the head bolts? That one little bend in the gasket was probably just enough to make it leak.
You need to see this thread. Getting rid of the rust CAN be done, but do you have this kind of patience?
