Some BHG questions. I know, I know. Easy to answer questions though.

Ok so I'll try and make this as easy to answer as possible, cause I know people hate these threads, as do I.:1zhelp:

Car: 7MGE
Problem: BHG
Symptoms:
  • Overheating after the car warms up
  • Coolant out the resevior
  • Milky in the Oil Cap
  • Coolant in the oil when I drained it
  • Oil in the coolant when I drained it
  • A lot of white smoke out the back (Only ran for about a minute or less when it got to this point)

Now, I got the head off and to my surprise the HG looks perfectly fine. BUT #5 and #6 cylinders were definitely getting coolant into them. None of the jackets on the HG are missing or bent and the only thing that was abnormal was around the cylinder opening in the gasket it was bent a little, not perfectly round (I don't see why that would cause it to leak though...)

Also, the #6 cylinder wall looks different than the nicely cross-hatched walls of the other cylinders (except I couldn't see #5 and #2 cause of the piston being up all the way). It's obviously because it was leaking in that cylinder but how do I know if the wall is still ok?

Re-cap:
  • What would cause coolant to leak into the cylinders if the HG isn't blown? (Just hypothetical, not saying mine isn't blown.)
  • What determines if a cylinder will need to be bored out?
  • And do you think I need to take the head to get machined? (I'll be using a stock replacement HG and ARP hardware)
  • On my HG there is water jackets identical to each other on either side but on the block itself the holes are not identical on either side. It's because the HG's are universal right? (meaning for GTE's and GE's)

Thanks guys!!!!:love::love:

1. Cracked head or block. Yours is probably just blown but youll have to take it to a machinist and have him check it out for you.

2. A cylinder would have to be bored out due to bore damage or if the bore had ovalled.

3. You will need to inspect the mating surface of the head and get a machinists straight edge and feeler gauges and check the head, the TSRM has the procedures for all of this.

4. No. They are all like that.

First, thanks for the reply. Second, what is "bore damage". Ughh I guess I need a pic of the wall.

Check the block and head carefully where the gasket is bent.
Thanks for gracing me with your presence, Pope. What am I looking for when I inspect it?

So was this motor recently "rebuilt"? How easy was it to remove the head bolts? That one little bend in the gasket was probably just enough to make it leak.

Yeah it was recently "rebuilt" by a Toyota mechanic(previous owner). So you KNOW it wasn't torqued right, haha. The head bolts weren't "Easy" to take off but they weren't crazy hard. (still used a breaker bar)

TF: If you have a straight edge hold it across the block and head around there and see if there are any lows in either.

For the gasket to deform at all there has to either be detonation or low pressure on the surfaces near by ie: loose bolts (compared to the rest) or lows in the surfaces.

Lol no way. I am not rebuilding a 7MGE...

I'll take the head to a machine shop, see what they say, and put a stock HG and ARP's on. If it blows then w/e, I'm getting a 7mgte...

So you'd rather have a random 7mgte than a rebuilt 7mge?

Haha, I'd go for the rebuilt one just so I wouldn't have to worry about the condition of another engine I got from somewhere. Oh well, good luck.

I'd do the ring and bearing thing in a GTE for peace of mind knowing that my GE with a stock gasket correctly installed was going to be fine until the GTE was ready to drop in one weekend ;)
