Why does everyone underestimate the MKIII?

Okay one last thing. Yesterday getting gas and the car next to me I see the guy looking at my car. he gets out, asks is that a supra? man that thing is mint" Made my day.

As said countles times before. Keep em clean, maintained properly and you'll get plenty of ...what was this thread about again. Sucks getting old!

A guy walked up to my car at the paint shop and was glad to see a MK3 being restored. He said it was one of the best looking cars for its era and is still a head turner. He did state that most of the ones he sees on the road looked bad and that is was a shame they are hard to find in good condition.

Sleepers dont have to be ugly beaters... A stock looking car that's clean with a lot of power is a sleeper.

A 10 sec rust bucket is still a rust bucket. Doesn't matter how much money is under the hood.

Still sounds like an excuse not to fix the car.

This describes my build exactly! I'm going for pretty much everything oem but modding the engine for fun!

My car is starting to rust on the panels, oddly the underside seems in better health than the panels. I can't afford a full blow paint job, so I'm having the rust fixed then spraying it flat black, I know it screams cheap bastard but I'd rather not see the body deteriorate anymore.

I've had a middle age guy that usually gives me shit about liking imports, then tells me that forced induction is cheating etc tell me that he's always liked the lines on the mkiii, even if it is a Toyota. I guess its all in the maturity level of who's looking at your car, in my eyes taking care of the rust is at least taking the halfway step between getting the car entirely freshed up. The interior isn't bad, I do porter work quite often though so as soon as its roadworthy its getting a full extraction and surface protection on the interior.

If its beaten, help it up.

If its a choice between pretty sparkly things to make the car look nice or go faster parts, The go faster bits get the nod every time. I know I'm in the minority here but I would rather have a 400whp tatty looking supra than a mint stock one. Unfortunatly when your not raking in the greenbacks it comes down to a choice as to where your money goes. Even though my car isn't the cleanest MK3 you will ever see I still get people turning there heads as I drive past.

That arguement doesn't fly.

It doesn't cost a thing to drag your vacuum out, and clean your car.

Last time I checked a vacume couldn't restore shabby paint.

No, but it's a start. I've never gotten crap having a panel or two in primer (sealed) as long as everything was damn clean.

You can look at two cars, and see an obvious difference in a vehicle that someone is in the process of restoring (and is caring for) vs a vehicle that is just a POS beater.

Now that I think of it, I'm struggling to think that FWD/4 Banger that looks even remotely like a Supra.

The only thing that springs to mind is a Honda Prelude...

yep, plus you don't have another reason to cry when your $2000 paint job is scraped off at 100mph on the wall at the strip.

If you're building your car in anticipation of crashing into the walls at the drag strip, you have worse problems than someone underestimating your car.

who said anything about "anticipating"; shit happens.

i don't know why most here thinks your car should look nice before it goes fast. maybe that's what the problem is in reference to the thread title?

<edit> wanted to add, you should prepare your car for a wreck. if no one is worried about wrecking, why would anyone spend the money on a roll cage, or race buckets/harnesses? it's cause they understand shit happens, not because they go to the track expecting to wreck

It should be balanced. Not one or the other, but most people totally disregard the "looks" department, other than lowering it/putting some wheels on. They let it have rust all over, scratches, dents, and have dirty interiors that are as damaged as the outside. Some don't even clean their cars, and that's sad.

After reading 12 pages of this, I think I can distill this down to two points of view:

POV 1. I own a MKIII even though I could get (or have) a newer car, because I love it.
I will restore, maintain, and improve it in any way I can.
I am willing to work on it and/or pay for it to be right.

POV 2.
If I won the lotto, I'd buy a Viper and bolt on all the aftermarket crap I could get my hands on.
I bought a MKIII because I'm broke, I got it cheap, and it's fast compared to the econo-box I abused and neglected untill it blew-up or fell apart as a result of my bad judgement and apathy.
I shall do the same with my MKIII.

Sound about right? I think so.
