hrm i wonder if it would be worth putting a fuel/water seperator in with e85. or does that make more sense with marine/diesel applications

are you going to store the E85 over extended periods?

If not, no need for a fuel water seperator.

^ +1 If you leave a tank of E85 in your car for 3+ months then you may have issues starting and running smoothly.

THat being said I have a friend with an EJ205 swapped wrx that let his car sit outside all winter with a 1/4 tank. He started it right up in the spring and went and topped it off and was fine. I hav another friend who runs his Evo 8 on E85 year round. He has a milder tune due to the E70 we have here during the winter.

Most of the negatives you hear about this fuel are ignorance and rumor. I would say 75% of the fast cars I know around here run it and they have only great results.

At least you guys GET E85. Up here in Canada, we can only dream of having such a fuel. *sigh* I GUESS I can stick with 94 octane for now.

No kidding JJ... only recently has E85 been made available, at ONE station that I've noticed so far. Most of the other ones have "NO ETHANOL" or, "NO CORN FUEL HERE" signs up. Ignorance at its best... then again, most people around here would be too busy trying to figure out how to stuff creamed corn through a carburetor to really appreciate E85. :nono:

you know i thought exactly that as i was heading home today, most of them you see on heavy equipment that arent used every day

i did price out a fuel line today too - nylon is about 1$ a foot and fittings couple bucks each. metal fittings (adaptors mainly) few bucks more each i did not see how much the metal lines are though (rust free alloy as they advertise) im sure its about the same or cheaper

No need for a water separator. I let my Volvo sit for a month or more over summer (when riding the bike to work) and had no issues.
I don't think a water separator would work with E85, the ethanol will just absorb the water and pass it through the engine. Any properly functioning fuel system won't create enough condensation inside a tank for it to be an issue anyway.

for the lines you can easily make your own steel / nylon combos. the hardest part is finding a fitting that goes from your standard brake line to a fuel filter =D

You DO NOT NEED any special lines to run E85. Have you read anything about it? Have you read this thread? It is NOT corrosive and DOES NOT damage stock fuel systems on anything made after about 1980.

You can buy all the stuff to retrofit from rubber to nylon fuel line at almost any auto parts store. Dorman makes the stuff. They sell brass compression fittings that are for steel to nylon connections and the black E85 safe nylon tubing itself. You can replace all the steel fuel line with that stuff from the tank to the fuel rail if you wanted to. That's the way Ford uses it. I use this stuff at work to fix OEM lines on Ford and GM flex fuel vehicles all the time (the steel tubing rusts out and it's easier to replace it with nylon and just as safe).

Not that anyone around here uses E85 in a daily driver. There's ONE pump 20 miles away last I checked.

Well, gasoline without ethanol gives you better gas milage. I've also found it runs better...

Actually you might want to read your manual... Not to mention it's a good idea to change out the lines anyway because of age.

no you dont need special lines but its sure convenient ;) once you start actually doing it its easier to look at one product line rather than 8 (ive been there) dorman is super pricey in comparison and is *very* limited in offerings to just general repair especially when it comes to availability. and to second poodles post i see minor seepage coming from some of my connections =/ why ive been set on it lately

and denver is packed with e85 stations

I can see that. However, shouldn't an E10 or E15 mix give better detonation resistance? I'm more concerned about that than I am about how far a gallon takes me, even at $4.00/gallon...

Toyota says otherwise, but hey, what do they know.

Ethanol is horrible for regular fuel systems. Check any small engine or vintage motorcycle forums for tons of horror stories caused by just the standard 10% found in most gas now.

Nope, it's mixed to get the same octane rating, but has less energy.

Small motors are also more sensative to the mix. Lawn care equipment is especially prone to issues from it :(

I encourage all the haters and know nothings to avoid E85 forever and leave the rest for me. The less of a threat E85 is to big oil the less they will drive up prices by bidding on corn futures (like they already do) in order to make it less viable. There is plenty of suppport for it in this area to keep local producers stocking tanks for a long time at cheaper prices.

Btw it's popular here because it clearly sucks and will not reduce detonation thus allowing you to not run substantially more timing and boost and not make superior horsepower to 93 or 94 octane super awesome real gas.

How about all the blowhards who have no idea about E85 stop commenting and let those of us who have actually used the fuel for a considerable time make, proper, unbiased comments?

How about you stop regurgitating myths and try running the fuel for a while. You know, actually learn something instead of pretending to be an expert on every subject?

Not a hater, just rather people do it right :) Plus, corn based ethanol production is just stupid. It uses just as much energy as conventional fuels. Now sugar cane based ethanol is far better because of the higher sugar content.

Sounds way too much like the "I deleted my EGR (or other mis. part under the hood to make the engine bay "cleaner) and my car is ok" crap as well.
