since i was given a long weekend (not really, worked saturday till 3) i decided to check valve clearance and do the valve stem seals. Saturday was spent dissasembling the upper portion of the motor. Had some trouble removing the cam gears off but managed to get them off w/ the help of a friend. Decided to use a cam gear to rotate the cams to check the valve clearance. Took some measurements but decided to re-measure sunday morning.

Sunday morning came by and i managed to get all 12 exhaust valves checked... then my mom decided to take me grocery shopping. :3d_frown: that took up about 2 hours of my time going from windixie to navarro to publix then home.... unloaded the groceries helpped her put them away and back to work on the car. Measured the 12 intake valves then went back to double check. Results are as follows.

Note: On the feeler gauge it read as follows:

Example:
.012
.305
MM

I1 - .006 .152mm
I2 - .011 .279mm
I3 - .012 .305mm
I4 - .014 .356mm
I5 - .013 .330mm
I6 - .014 .356mm
I7 - .014 .356mm
I8 - .013 .330mm
I9 - .012 .305mm
I10 - .012 .305mm

I12 - .010 .254mm

Continued to dissassembled and got to do the E1 valve stem seal when I had to go in for dinner. Ate to much i decided to go to sleep when seeing how dark it was getting. Didn't feel like loosing a valve keeper in the dark. Today, sunday i've been messing w/ E2 for about 2 hours. Got everything off easily. But OMG putting everything back together was a bitch! Lost the keepers like 3 times, couldn't get them to stay on the valve, dropped em into the head like 2 times and started to have a panic attack because of it. :nono: found the keepers, regained my composure, and put it back together.

Got I1 nearly done when it began to rain. No clouds or anything just light rain then hard. Jumped in the car to wait it out then decided to come inside and post. Also to check the time. Hope to get all 24 done today and maybe reassemble. Need the car for the week then dissasemble again to measure the shims then order the new ones... either that or i might just bag each shim and label the bags and take em to work so i can measure them w/ a micrometer so i can order the right shims and wait it out w/o a car having my sister take me to work.

managed to get to cylinder 3, E5 and I5 were done. Got stuck on E6. I really need to get the right tool for this because its really annoying me. Want to finish replacing the valve seals so i can get to measuring the existing valve shims and get the numbers jotted down so i can order the new shims.

ok, neither valve spring compressor worked. Have to wait till friday to be able to go out and make my own. Also gotta see if I either order a metric micrometer from mac tommorrow or just run off to northern tools on friday and see if i can't buy one seeing as no one at work has one.

ok, machined the inner diameter of a 3/4 PVC tube a bit to clear the valve springs. Cut a notch on the bottom so when the sleeve is sat down onto the valve spring seat you can still see the top of the retainer where the valve locks go. Followed that up by doing the same to a 1/2 PVC tube to use as a pusher for the valve springs.

Used that (with the help of my sister to put the valve locks back in as i was compressing the valve springs) to finish up cylinders 3 and 4. As I was removing the valve stem seal for the rear intake valve on cylinder 4, when the seal popped up off the valve stem it jumpped into a oil drain hole in the head that was right next to it and fell into the block. Got paranoid so I called the senior heavy line tech from my job and explained to him the situation. As I was hoping, I shouldn't have any problems. He says that the seal shouldn't get caught on anything, that it should just drop to the oil pan and be ok. So today (sunday morning) im going to go outside, stuff cylinder 5 w/ rope so I can get that one done and then move onto cylinder 6. Hopefuly it doesn't rain and i can finish the valve stem seals today.

I just read the all 23 pages :) I am glad you chose to save a supra instead of scrap it.

Sounds and seems like you have taken this car a long way. I can respect that keep the good work up.

just trying to prove supracentral's statement that "99 times out of 100, the weak link in the MKIII is the owner." these things can be flawless... If you adress all the issues they have. If not, you'll regret it. Its a high maintenance chick... only difference is when you turn on a supra, it returns the favor. :naughty:

Figured Id post some more pictures for you guys....

Multiple pictures of the dissassembled head (also seen is the home made valve spring compressor tool and the valve retaining rope in one of the cylinders).
p1406947_6.jpg

the little hole above the valve swallowed a old valve seal. Expect to find it in the oil pan latter on.

In the middle top of this picture theres a hole that also swallowed another old valve seal. Thats two in the pan.

have 23 of the seals done. when i had opened the bag of valve stem seals the bag broke open and the seals scattered. I managed to find 23 of them as opposed to the full 24 so I called Headquarter Toyota and ordered another valve stem seal wich should hopefuly be in today. Going to try to go get that this afternoon and put the last stem seal in. Going to finish w/ the seals hopefuly and then wait till tommorrow for my micrometer for the shims.

well I called Headquarter Toyota and they say the valve stem seal is on back order. Also went looking around for the part number for the stem seal this morning so I could use the part number as referance for my order and happened to notice the part numbers for the different valve shims. Then glanced at the side to notice their $10.27/ea price tag. I was really hoping it'd cost me less than the possible $246.48 (tax not included) to adjust valve clearance. Heh, could just imagine what this job would cost if I had taken the car to Toyota and had to pay labor as well as parts.

if you are looking for cheap valve shims go to www.goodson.com. 25mm shims. They are 16bx for set of 4. They call them valve clearance discs.

Thank you sir. Bookmarking the page as we speak. Was thinking against it till i found the size shims that match what Toyota offers. Dont trust american parts companies for some reason. Having a Jap car and all i keep thining imma screw myself out of the right part.

Ok, got the final valve stem seal. The toyota one is brown and the other ones i had were black. Doubt it'll make much of a difference but oh well, just an observation. Was about to try to install the final seal when I noticed that I hadn't yet removed the last valve stem seal. Also wasn't really thinking when I called Toyota and found out they had the seal so I didn't bring any tools with me. So can't finish up the valve stem seals. That and my sister is being a lazy f@ck and doesn't feel like helping me finish installing the valve keeps on the other 3 valves that have been finished up on cylinder 6.

On a different note, checked w/ Mark Myers (my MAC Tools Distributor) and he hasn't recieved the Micrometer in yet. Told me he should be getting it in tonight (not that that helps me seeing as I wont see him again till next wednesday). So can't really get much done on the car at the moment. Still just waiting.

IIRC you can get valve shims for a yamaha cbx750, I think they are pretty cheap also.

really now? I had also heard Ztec Focus' shims are interchangable w/ ours. Might check for employee pricing at the dealership i work at. Thanks for the info. Still waiting to get to actually do the shims. Can't measure them so can't do em yet.

ok, installed the final valve stem seal. ~sighs~ at times its hard to find motivation or the drive to continue/finish this project.. At times, the reality that I keep sinking all of my available money into this car that isn't even transporting me anywhere and that as befor im sacrificing alot of my life to make this Supra what i want it to be sinks in and it becomes very depressing. Dammit! I really gotta find a money tree!

learned something new today. My dispatcher at work was telling me to just reassemble the head on the 7M saying that after dropping the used motor in and the initial start up that the head sounded fine and that it didn't sound like I needed any valve adjustment. I followed that up by showing him the clearances I had for the shims and told him what I was supposed to have. He told me that If the clearances were a little off on the loose side that I should just leave the clearances alone and not worry about it but after noticing that my clearances were on the tight side he said that I should adjust because I might Burn a Valve.

It did'nt hit me right away what he meant by that. "Burn a valve?" i thought to myself. After talking to another tech he got me to the realization that it wasn't so much burning, but that the cam lobe would wear down the valve stem if the clearances were too tight. So yeah, still waiting for the chance to be able to get that taken care of...

ok, got the valve springs/retainers, seats, locks all in place. Didn't bring any tools from work so not too much i can do. I presented cyl 6's spark plug and hand threaded it in a bit to keep anything from falling in the cylinder. I decided, where better to keep from mixing up the shims than back ontop of their appropriate spring. So I've taken the liberty of installing all the intake side lifters and shims back in their place and most of the Exhaust side. Have 3 that are giving me some trouble so i decided to take a short brake from the sun and work to come in and post my status.

ok, while waiting for my micrometer i've gone and re-adjusted some of the lifter buckets. Had 6 that were sticking. E6 is still giving me problems. Might be having some clearance issues in the valve spring bore or might have to re-adjust the valve spring itself. We'll see whats up. Keep ya posted.
