Thanks for the suggestions. No one commented on my wierd night though. The whole night was a mixture of the perfect thing happening followed by the worst, then repeating.

I read alot when Im on here, even the stuff that doesnt particularly relate to me at the moment. So I had read about heat soak, the CPS connection, the security system reset, which is a good thing, It means Im prepared.

Of course I brought my tool box up with me and a floor jack and flashlight, so Im a good and proper supra owner (even if I did feel stupid sitting on a curb in resturant parking lot with my dog and my tools). But this was kinda odd for me. Im used to getting some warnig signs for problems not just having a problem turn on andd off like a switch.

I'll dig a bit deeper in a couple days. I got cleaning, polishing, lowering, fluid changes, stereo swap and other things to keep me busy until the weekend.

Edit: oh yeah, and I gotta paint some wings! and take pictures...coming soon!

I've had cps wiring and heat soak cause that. Check the coils real close for little cracks, and when its running wiggle cps wiring around and see if it stumbles or dies.

#1.) Read this:

http://www.supramania.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23605

#2.) You know i love you weez, as ^ Im just joking. You could have called me for help even though Im 2000 miles away.

#3.) My car used to do this all the time. Turns out it was heat soak through the fuel rail and not enough fuel pressure for a hot start up. If you have a stock fuel system, and the car does this, simply take the vacuum hose off the FPR and try again. If that fails. Let the car cool with the hood open. Then try again.

Also, if it does it again, watch the tach needle while you crank it. If it doesn't bounce slightly then it's 99% likely the CPS. The other time I saw this the ECU wasn't getting +12V from the ignition, but the way to see if that's the problem is if the battery light doesn't come on with the ignition.

could this be some issue with a standard fit alarm?? i had a fault like this keep happening. i changed the igniter, ecu, leads, plugs, coil pack and dizzy caps. then one time after i swaped out an igniter i noticed where toyota had spliced into the loom for the alarm (dealer fit in the uk) i removed it all and no problems since. i would get weird shit like a weak spark and stuff and it would randomly cut out then start again randomly

actually, I knew about that thread MDC, as Im listed in it...LOL
and I called a buddy to have him look at it and try to find a connection member in or around Portland. As it turned out, I didnt need to...the gods were just messing me. But yeah, next time I take any kind of road trip Im gonna check that thread and print out everyone listed along the route, for a "just in case" measure.

Thanks for the aditional info on the FPR, I'll remember that one. Does that mean the FPR would need to be replaced? or how would you fix that issue permanently? new pump? (planned upgrade there anyways)

Im actually leaning towards a fuel issue myself. It was 3 feet away and through a windshield, but it looked like I was getting a nice bright blue spark. and it was going off in time to the crank.

well I definately am not ruling out the stock security system. I have a spare Security module I might swap in for testing purpose. and I need to replace the hood latch anyways, so I'll be replacing that swith with it. I dunno...I'll keep it in the back of my mind.

Not always true, mine would die driving and no start sometimes, it was cps wiring, I never got a code. It prob depends which wire I guess.

12 RPM Signal Diagnosis
  • No "NE" or "G" signal to ECU within 2 seconds after engine has been cranked.
Trouble Area
  • Distributor, or CPS, circuit
  • Distributor or CPS
  • Starter signal circuit
  • ECU

I have a tsrm but I gaurantee you you can have cps wire problems and no code. Sometimes it would act like timing was way off, like it was hydrolocking. Sometimes it would crank fast like belt was broken. It was weird. Wiggle the wires, it would start right up. Replaced connectors, never happened again.

As far as your nite... getting brought up and then being let down.

Get used to it, it's why we are all here for the car we love to hate ;-)

You will be suprised at all of the seemingly unrelated stuff that is fixed by something you wouldn't have thought of. The cig lighter fuse is one I can think of (lots of other stuff it addresses)...

Hot start problem. My new(used) Mk3 did the same thing. 4 out of 5 times it would crank but not start when hot. The previous owner could not find the problem. After reading a few posts I thought it might have been the CPS (cam position sensor) or plug. Sure enough, after jiggling that brittle green plug it would start up. After having to do this each time I stopped to go shopping, I decided to cut the plugs off and solder the wires permanently. This problem has NEVER bugged me again. Hopefully it's the same for you! If so, no biggie!

Hi mate, yes deffo keep inmind the alarm module. it may save you money in ther long term. it could well be a dirty relay in the alarm itself. good luck in finding your fault

I enjoyed your story.

Something like that happened to me but I was pretty close to home.
Cut out while I was cruising on the highway, wouldn't start even when I tried to jump it into gear. Had to coast to the shoulder and wait for the tow. Strangely enough a new srt-4 Neon broke down about 100 yards behind me. :biglaugh:
