Man..:(.. had I known exactly what you were up to, I would have reviewed the procedure of the exact task/s at hand. For some reason, I thought we were going to be dropping the motor in (maybe because to me, that is the only part I would need a third hand in, so I assumed that was what we would be up to.)
Damn, that sucks to have to do it again.

Just did some research and found that you could do it differently than we did it:

…NOW TO PUT THE BELT ON..

1) loosen the Timing belt Tensioner 1 14MM bolt. Use needle nose pliers to take the Spring off.

2) Point the Cams Notches to the TOP 12 O'CLOCK (both Cams)

3) Slip the belt on carefully not to move the crank or the cam positions.

4) Put the Timing belt tensioner back on, Use needle nose to put spring back in place. Pull on the tensioner to make sure the belt is nice and tight….

It seems as though you could just take out the spring – it may be much easier that way while putting the belt back on.

I just wrote a CD for you. It includes the higher resolution TSRM, the Cygnus site, and a couple other useful write-ups.
It should be at your house either tomorrow or Monday.

I know you would like this project done already, but if it were me, I would not rush it. Doing such important steps under pressure is not a good thing. As long as you put time into it, it will be done. Always racing the clock and wishing you were done already is something that would scare me on such a big job.

hey tony, thanks! yeah, i'll try pulling off the tensioner pulley and spring. that'll be easier than just moving the pulley over as far as it can go. pulling it off would enable the timing belt to go on at the right angle, instead of trying to kindof pry it on. then the pulley would just pop back in with a little finesse. good call.

also, thanks for sending the CD etc! i talked with my dad, and he said he would rather me take my time than rush. (for those of you who dont know, my car has been sitting in the driveway since there was still snow on the ground, and my dad would like to seal the driveway before fall, so i was pressed for time)

anway, in about a half hour or so the head's going back on, then i'll re-set the base timing and start on the intake manifold assembly.

update: i've got the motor built back up to where it was before i had it ripped down, plus i used JBL's site to allign the CPS. worked like a charm. so now all i need to do are the manifold assemblies and wiring, put the clutch setup/flywheel back on, bolt on the tranny and i'm done. i'm going to get an early jump on today as well. i'll probably begin work at around 7am, and work until about 2pm. that should be plenty of time, but i want this all done right.

also, tony: that method of doing the timing belt (pioneer's writeup) worked perfectly. i did it myself in a matter of minutes. (i also marked the previous parts of the belt to line up with the marks on the cams/timing cover, so i just lined them up and popped that pulley in. worked great! thanks:)

i'll post today's pics tomorrow. i have dial up, so i really need time to load them all:( i'm going to get an image shack acct. so i dont have to keep attaching them.

-shaeff

i tried to just upload a teaser, but it wouldnt load. oh well, i'm tired, and have now been up for 21hrs straight. i'm going to bed.

i live by www.supratsrm.com - the online TSRM (toyota supra repair manual)

i've got all kinds of pics to upload, but my computer was being a dickface last night, so i couldnt. (i apologize)

but to update the thread-

today i put on the exhaust manifold assembly, as well as the turbo and oil lines. i put on the thermostat housing, but i dont have a thermostat yet so i couldnt finish that. (getting a 160*)

also, i flipped the motor over, and broke the oil pan loose so that i can shim the pump. (going with 5mm of washes) after that, waiting on injector clips, then i can wire it up, put on the clutch and flywheel, then put on the tranny.

Awesome Shaeff! Man, its so cool to have all these re-build threads going at once! Its cool to see all the different little things that people are having problems with and what they are doing differently from eachother. Good luck with the rest of the process!

Thanks! I must not be too bright, I had the TSRM page bookmarked, but hadn't looked far enough intoit. Post all the pics you can please as I am going to refer to them when I do my rebuild. Thanks again.

update/pics!

ok, so day three didnt quite go as planned, but i got SOME stuff done. i finally mounted the fuel rail with the new 550cc injectors, bolted the thermostat housing to the head, put on the exhaust manifold (and forgot the large heat sheild! dammit!- doesnt matter, it's coming back off wen i do my turbo upgrade by the end of the summer, so it's fine for now)

i got the turbo assembly mounted, bolted down, oil lines hooked up with new copper o-rings and gaskets. the messed up coolant hoses you see will be replaced, dont worry. i cut them so that i'd HAVE to replace them! (i'm so smart :icon_razz ) i dont think it shows in the pics, but the dipstick is on, too. :)

also, an interesting thing for you fellas/fellettes (if thats even a word, haha) my motor is an 89+ motor, with corresponding motormounts. my car is an 86.5, so i obviously used my old mounts. however, the fuel feed line bolts to the motormounts on both yearspan engines. i just realized the other day that i could take the feed line off my N/A motor, and put it on this one just like it was on the old one. (the only reason i thought about it was because i hated it just hanging there, even though its a hardline and doesnt really move much. needless to say, it's now bolted down because i took it off my old motor.

right now, the motor is flipped over, and the upper intake manifold isnt on yet. i'm going to shim the oil pump tomorrow, will take pics. then the oil pan goes back on, motor goes upright again, and wiring begins. i'm call ing RC/lucas tomorrow to order injector clips, so hopefully they'll be here by friday. i have everything else i need to finish! on to the pics-

(sigh, this takes forever to load pics onto image shack with dialup! garrrrr!!!)

exhaust manifold on:

turbo on:

out with the old, in with the new! :)

and the fuel rail installed:

and shimmed wastegate with three washers to help hold boost until redline. (doc jonez MBC on the way:))

and flipped over in preparation of oil pump shimming.

and lastly, this is the car i get to pull in and out of the garage every time i want to work on my motor: 1970 chevy malibu chevelle convertible, 350ci (origionally a 307ci), holley 750cfm carb, mid-rise edelbrock intake manifold, high lift cam, headers, and exhaust that ends right under the drivers/passengers seats. (boy does it sound nasty!) the rear tires are about 12" wide mounted on deep dish oldschool crager SS rims, and it smokes those suckers right up:) (even better, my dad's handing it down to me in 5 years!!! ((my bro got a '52 chevy pickup)) -only things my parents "gave us" and they're like father/son projects.

today, i shimmed my oil pump using a custom shim i made out of a bolt. i cut the bolt to 5mm, and drilled a hole in it, (dont know if it needs one, but i made one anyway!) i'll post pics of that up later. i also pressure washed my oil pan. i'm using truck bed undercoat to coat it so it doesnt rust. (works really well, i used it on my gas tank, very tough, and resistant to rust and stone kickup) pics later tonight!

ok here we go.

pic of when i first pulled the oil pan off:

middle shot:

6M crank, woo! (this means that my motor is an early '89 motor, as it had '89+ motor mounts:

to shim the oil pump, i made a custom shim that's 5mm long. it's cut from a bolt, and the ends are filed down smooth/rounded. i wasnt sure if it needed a hole in it, so i drilled one anyway. this took 5 minutes to complete, and is easier than dealing with 5mm worth of washers, which can be easily dropped, etc:

the large gold colored nut is the one that needed to be removed in order to shim the oil pump.

pull that out (be careful, there's a decent amount of spring pressure on it, so dont lose grip of it!) as well as the spring, and place the shim between the spring and relief valve, as indicated in the exploded diagram in this picture (which also shows the spring and nut holding it all in) when you put the spring and nut back in with the shim, it's really tough to hold onto it, as you've increased the spring pressure with the shim, so be careful with it:

then re-assemble, and you're done shimming the oil pump! it's pretty straight forward. the reason i only went with 5mm of shim is because i'm planning to take the filter adapter off my N/A motor, and getting a remote filter kit so that should boost oil pressure a bit as well, and i dont want it TOO high!

i just still have to figure out how i can run the N/A filter mount with remote kit with the stock oil cooler. (any input would be nice, but i'll search as well, i remember kamil having a decent diagram of this here on SM)

the mating surface of the oil pan all cleaned up:

the oil pan goes back on tomorrow, if i have time. we'll see!

another thing i did quickly today, which isn't finished yet- i pulled off the J-tube and stuck it in the vice on my workbech. i whipped out one of my nice sharp craftsman chisels and a decent hammer, and chisled off the actual piping, leaving the plate only. if time allows, tomorrow i'll grind down the remains of the j-tube, sand it nice and smooth, and paint it to prevent rust. then i'll re-install it. this is a nice alternative to buying a j-tube blockoff plate. the four marks you see are what's left from the flat mounting point of the piping. the scratches are NOT deep, even though they look like they are. total time to remove j-tube from block, AND chisel it off- 10 minutes:

maybe i'll try to bend the oil pickup tube down further into the oil pan as well. i'm really not sure yet...

oh yeah, and my injector clips will be at my door on thursday, so i'll solder them to my harness then, plug them in, and my wiring will all be done thursday, (save for the ECU/HAC, chassis harness connectors.

Just to make sure: it did arrive on Monday, correct? The woman at the post office said it would be there Monday. Just want to be sure you got it:)

That is something I never understood -- even if it takes you a month longer to put things together, you will still have plenty of time to seal the driveway.

Glad to hear it – especially since I keep recommending it be done that way.

Awesome! That too was something that I read, but never tried. It just seems the better way though. Glad it worked out easily for you.

May I recommend (and I made the same mistake too) not using the such a high resolution for the pictures. Set the camera to less megapixels, unless you want 2048x1536 pictures, that is. Just trying to save you time in the future :)

Oh, no! I have had some operations my self in the past so I have some sense on what they can be like. Best wishes to Sister Shaeff! I got to meet her as well as I got to meet them all: Big Daddy Shaeff (also a really cool Tony like me), Mama Shaeff (she kept busting on our Shaeff to hurry up and called the car a flower pot :(), and Brother Shaeff too.

Keeping an eye out on this thread,
