well guys and gals, it's about time i posted up my plans and go to work now that i have most of the parts i need to achieve my goal of 400-420rwhp.

here's a little background on my car-

i bought it in february, two years ago. an 86.5 N/A, black with gray leather interior off of ebay, for a grand total of $820. the body isnt in the greatest shape, but thats cosmetic, and will come after my power goals are reached. it ran great, had decent power for having about 200k miles on the clock, and was reliable. (only repair aside from general maintenance i had to do was put new brushes in the alternator) i drove it around all crazy like for about a year and a half or so. then i decided to lower it. i got some eibach's and some koni's and went to work. after a few hours, i had my car riding all mean-like and the handling was much more to my standards, and i could tell my new kumho ecsta supras wouldnt last... or would they?....

that very same day (i drove a total of 30 miles, and had my girlfriend in the car, so no real FUN driving) i spun a rod bearing. i parked the car, and ordered a JDM motor off ebay, only because i couldnt find any USDM's. boy was i pissed.

after saving some cash, working my ass off, and careful planning, i finally got done with the swap. the car was on the road for about 2 months after the swap was complete. it was pretty quick. i handed many people their asses, and it was damn fun. the only mods i had were:
-BIC ddp
-Clutchmasters stage III
-Fidanza Lightweight Flywheel

unbeknownst to me, the rear seal on my w58 tranny was leaking, and instead of the gear oil dripping down onto the ground, it coated the underside of the car. (i had no idea this was happening until it was too late) one day on my way home from college, the tranny blew. black smoke billowed into the cabin of the car (yes, through the rubber shifter grommet) i quickly pulled over and figured out the problem, and limped home. (only 1.5 miles)

the car has been parked ever since (its been about 3.5 months) because me being how i am, i refused to just pull the tranny, but instead, pull the motor/tranny as a combo, and put in a MHG (i went with the Cometic). well, delays are common, but with me, i always get shafted. :( things never work out the way they should, which is exactly why i've taken so long to get this done. some of my parts took forever to come, some junkyards screwed me over etc...

so anyway, on wednesday, if all goes according to plans, my car will be close to completion. Tony Mawad is comin' down (lives about 40min away) and we're gonna wrench on the supra for quite a few hours. i hope to have the motor re-assembled, wiring harness on, gas tank back in from the walbro install. hopefully, on wednesday i'll just need a FEW more parts to get it done. my goal is to have it on the road by august 24th. (crosses fingers)

so here are the mods that i've had, and accumulated, and are now sitting in my closet: updating the mods list to what's actually ON the car/motor now.

INSTALLED:
-ARP Headstuds
-Autolite 3923's
-Walbro 255 Fuel Pump
-R/C (Lucas) Engineering 550cc injectors
-Cometic 1.4mm MHG -installed
-1mm Oversize Valves (already installed in head)
-Clutchmasters Stage III (in the w58 tranny)
-Fidanza Lightweight Flywheel
-Eibach Pro Kit/ Koni Yellow Shocks
-BecauseIcan Divorced Wastegate Downpipe

AWAITING INSTALLATION:
-SAFC-II
-Greddy Wideband O2 Gauge
-MK IV TT Wheels
-MSD 8.5mm plug wires
-Upper hardpipe with BOV
-Lexus AFM
-Aeromotive AFPR with stainless steel braided hoses/shock tower mount

thats the basic jist of it. i'm planning on going with a 57 trim CT upgrade, or possibly a 60 trim, either way, unclipped. i'm staying on the stock bottom end. i'm in the market for a shortblock that i can build while i have fun with this one. once again, as soon as i get some cash.

:) and please dont tell me that my w58 isnt going to last, the tranny is something i'm looking out for when i get some more cash. it will suffice for now. :)

i'll have pics along the way too.

Sounds good Shaeff, can't wait to hear how it turns out. That basically sounds like the buildup I'm going to be doing this winter, but with a few different things than what I'm planning. Good luck with the project.

i think your tranny will last better than you think it will

oh, i know it will last. doc. jonez made his last with a CM stage IV clutch (way more harsh than mine) i dont beat on it all the time, but i have faith in my w58. if/when it blows, i'll upgrade to the r154, but i'm not about to drop my $550 CM stage III and fidanza FW for the w58 just yet, they're just broken in! (2k miles)

and there will be pretty much step by step pics of it, though the motor is already ripped down. everything is off except the oil pan. but i'm going to shim the oil pump while the motor is out. i decided on 6mm of washers for that. so i will be taking the pan off, just not quite yet. the bottom end is staying together. i'm not as good on cash as i was earlier this year, so the bottom end will remain stock, bone stock less the shimmed oil pump.

so today tony came down to my place and we messed with my motor. we ended up getting the headgasket coated, on, and torqued down to 90ft. lbs. we also set the base timing. (that was a pain) everything went relatively smoothly.

i had the motor sitting on some wood blocks, as i didnt want to take the clutch/flywheel assembly off to put it on the engine stand, but i finally decided to put it on the stand today, so i suppose i'll have to purchase some new flywheel bolts again. perhaps i'll get the ARP's this time.

so now the motor is on the stand, head on, and ready for the rest to be put together. (the reason for putting it on the engine stand is so that i can flip it over and shim the oil pump)

friday during the morning, i'm hoping to get the intake manifold assembly on, including my new 550cc injectors, and the aeromotive AFPR with stainless braided lines. once all that is in, i'll probably end up puttin the engine harness back on the intake side, and assembling the exhaust side.

my goal is to have the car started next friday. (crosses fingers)

tony's got some pics, that he'll either send me, or upload, whatever he wants to do.

i think my luck has turned. tonight i go to bed early so i can get up at 5am. i'll be pulling the head back off. [puts on double thick flame suit]

heh, it might help if i had som FIPG on those two small spots at the timing cover, huh? :: slaps self in head :: so i'm going to do that tomorrow, then at 10:30 ish, my dad is going to help me simply place the head back on, and by noon, i'll have the entire intake manifold assembly on the car, as well as wired up. (minus the injectors, still waiting on clips)

along with all that, i'll have to spray my MHG with brake clean to get the brake quiet off that was put on to help seal properly. then re-clean the head and block deck, and re-assemble. (not looking forward to re-setting the base timing either... )

anyway, here's a few pics from yesterday. tony's flash was acting up, so some are a little dark. i'll see if i can use my mom's camera to take some more shots when i rip it back down. this sucker will run by next friday. it WILL run. : sigh :

heh, not yet! i will, dont you worry. this is the 400hp motor. (when i gets me another longblock, ima build the crap out of it) this motor will be my spare, in time.

however, i might prep/paint the block while the motor is out. i havent decided. if i do it will be a light-ish gray, so i can see oil on it.

yeah.. i mean, by contrast, the head looks so good, then the block looks like you pulled it out of the backyard and just went "it'll run."
lol

good luck shaeff. i know the feeling of "it'll run FRIDAY", "it'll run SATURDAY", "I BETTER GET THIS FRIGGIN THING DONE THIS WEEK..."
haha

i want initial startup vids! i love them.

2 questions for now:
>where'd you buy your HG?
>what kind of valves are those?

kurt, the valves are actually those ones that guy Ted (englebar or something) was selling on ebay a few years ago. i've had them since before i even did a turbo swap. i figured now was the time to use them. my machinist said they're damn nice, and actually showed me some 7m ferrea valves, and they're not all that different, though i dont know about the weight difference. the headgasket is a Cometic, and i got it from www.paradiseracing.com. louis is an awesome guy, and i got it overnight. i ordered it 4:30pm on a wednesday, and received it at 11:45am the next day!

ian, that was a test fit of the head onto the headgasket/block area. you couldnt even feel it. it's just the color of the permatex brake quiet i used to help seal the HG that came off onto the head.

however, i wont make that mistake twice. like i stated above, thats all getting ripped apart again in 4.5 hours, and will be done PERFECTLY. trust me. :) i'm off to bed.

from what i've read, it's going to caruse you to leak oil from the front case area. thats why i'm up right now at 5:30am so i can pull the head back off, then just have my dad help me lift it off the head before he goes to work. (then it's going back on at like 10:30am)

i'm not wasting time on this. i work efficiently. :) we'll see how far i get by 1 or 2pm. (if i dont fall asleep first;))

edit/update: i've got the head off. (been off for 40 minutes- it took about a half hour to pull it all back apart)

i'm quite happy to say- with the coating on the HG (permatex brake quiet) and having the head already torqued down once made NICE outlines on the head and block deck, and every fire ring is 100% complete looking. nice solid blue lines where the HG goes, on both head and block. pics to come later. :)

so now i'm just waiting unitl my dad comes back from work (10:30ish) to put it back on. it's all prepped and ready to go again. i'll probably dick around with a few other things, scraping gaskets off the intake manifold assy. and whatnot. my goal of having it running again on friday august 19th is still quite possible.
