oh ok, thanks IJ...you seem have a great responce for everything i mention.... amazing. lol. do you think a supra with 108k miles (mine...lol) could be trusted on a mild trip? 200miles tops? i know you havent seen my engine and dont know whats been put into it...but i'm not sure what could commonly go bad with an engine of this age besides the BHG issues. if u had any thoughts against taking my car on this trip it might save me from getting in over my head.

supramacist - i used the original bolts...worked great and i didn't blow 80-100 bux on a few chunks of metal. (dont get me wrong...if i were building up an engine or fixing a turbo i would go with ARP right away...but for me the stockers were great.)

and i dont have any idea about what you're talking about with the 2mm or 1.5mm "beaded" thing...soo...yeah.

I wasn't knocking you dude, I hope you didn't think I was. I'm only going ARP because I want to never ever have to do this again. ARP's don't gaurantee this. I pulled the extreme end bolts, and the two of them were missing threads. That's 135k miles. So you are probably right. I just want to be able to drive the hell out of my car and not worry about BHG. I like the studs I have been thinking about all of this for quite sometime now. I am sure i will re read this thread for a reminder when I get to it.

I come from a land down under
Fig: If it has no cooling issues or Oil leaks and the Comp is even I'd trust it no problems at all!

I did 33 x 1800 km/1100mile trips in 1999 with 160,000+ km's on the clock and never had a single issue!

He's referring to metal head gaskets. You can order them in various different thicknesses and the construction of the gasket sometimes incorporates a "bead" around the combustion chamer. The idea is that when machining head/block, you raise compression. Getting a thicker head gasket can restore a bit of this. It's also used when trying to lower compression a bit for higher boost. The same is true for trying to raise compression a bit - thinner gasket, more compression. There are some tradeoffs though, namely the fact that the combustion chamber is designed with a certain amount of space between the head and the block surface. Things change when you alter the spacing. I'm not fully aware of the advantages/disadvantages but it's bound to do something.

I am def. going to ask the machinist his opinion. He said he removed 8 thousandths from the head. So I am really not sure. 2.mm or 1.5mm. It's about the last remaining thing that i am undecided upon. I am sure it is a very pressure sensitive area, to say the least. I'm probably going to stick to my original instinct and go with a the 2.

supramacist - i knew you weren't. i was tryping kind of odd...i think i was tired or in a hurry and it came out funny...my bad.

mick- oh ok cool. thanks for the info.

IJ - wow...you put 33thou on your car in a year? crazyness!! comp is even? only thing i can think that means is the computer isnt giving me the dash warning light. that will always come on with an error code right? or do i have to check it myself the the light is only for major issues?

oh. i guess i should go figure out what i need to read it then.

i have this little screwdriver-like probe with a light in the handle and a cable attached to the other end... can i use it? from what i remember in the TSRM you need some sort of light. and then a code book to find out what code it is...lol

A better option would be to measure the head and block to see how much has been removed as this may not be it's first time!

This is the first time the head has been shaven. Because the clowns that did this before me just slapped it back together. I'll have pics before and after and in between. It was a father and son team effort, son didn't know ass from hole, and dad pitched in when laddy got stumped. I used to work for pratt and whitney. Air plane engines mostly. F-18 parts. I can tell when something has been machined. The kicker is, I only took 1 photo of the deck of the head. And it was just a corner. Kick'n myself for that. Solid note though Ij, thanks for the responce.

I'm envious fig. I can't wait. Give her the goo in third once for me.

Johnathon....., WTF. was any glass broken or doors messed up or pint scratches? I have had my shit broken into once. In my personal experience, Once the rides cherry gets popped..., it'll happen in two's. It may be 6 or 8 months from now, but it will. I had a 95 nissan xev6 x cab, 5 spd 175hp. Slick truck. I got took fron that truck 3 times, I got rid of it and haven't had any problems since....., sorry, I'm rambling.

supramacist: actually they were taken from my carport, my car was parked elsewhere.

And I was just thinking about how my head was machined flush with the EGR cooler when i did my HG... It's not supposed to be like that...is it?

Also, my water jackets were almost erroded into the combustion chamber, and had to be re-welded, i guess?

damn..., life support. Mine would have been seen just above the exhaust manifold before I took it off. I'm in a 91. I told the machinist to do everything he could to it without the port and polish. I told him not to rape me. Ans I didn't want to spend over 500$ he came highly reccomended. The stealership uses him for there shiat. I just went to the source. I haven't seen anything about water jackets..., I need to do some research I guess, but it's sounding like things the machinist will have to do. He didn't find any cracks in it. I have seen his work and his shiat is tight.

john - here's a pic of the egr cooler...i believe mine was flush with the head surface as well. if both our cars run fine i wouldnt think twice about it! the water gacket thing sounds scary though! but if she runs fine i'd just use red coolant to make sure you dont get more erosion. :D

you left your tools in a car port? as in a public car port where anyone can see them? ...............was it the open-air type as well?

Yea, my Egr cooler looks just like yours... I have a BUNCH of pics that were taken during my HG job...but sadly, I don't think I will see them for a long time! And yes, my water jackets were erroded almost to the point of going into the combustion chamber...it was pretty scary, but the machine shop seemed to do an okay job...had to send it back though (the edges around the jackets weren't smooth enough).

As for the tools, they were in my carport under a bunch of crap in the corner (looked like a huge pile of trash) There weren't any lights on back there due to the fire a couple of weeks ago that melted all of the wiring for the flourescent lights that are usually on. I guess somone went rummaging in the absolute darkness, and got lucky...but oh well, I got another set for like 75 bucks...so it's all good....and yes, everything is now secured under lock and key.
