I think, unfortunately, tuning will get very difficult, and then become easier again once petroleum engines are replaced by electric. Have you seen what can be done with electric R/C car motors? It will go from turbo kits and nitrous to battery and electronic motor controller upgrades. Motor swaps won't go anywhere either.
The only downside is the cool noises won't be there anymore...

if you say that is far-fetched, that it only resembles the car slightly, and that any basic RWD sports car will have similar lines due to the set-up, then YOU have proven my point...
