I found a diamond grinder at Sears and after about an hour, no joke, I finally cut the damned thing out. I gave up on tapping it so I cleaned up the hole with a larger bit and used JB weld to put the bung on there. I'll be attempting to begin the turbo swap tomorrow.

Still working on the plumbing... The clown who pulled these turbos before I bought them seriously jacked up the front turbo oil feed line, and it took literally hours of fussing with test fittings and bending before getting the banjo bolt to line up and thread into the block. Now that I'm past that part, I should be on to the easy stuff.

damn man love the car

you have done and amazing job on your car man.

Thanks, man. It means a lot!

Well, the new setup is 95% complete. I need to fab one IC pipe and get a 14" section of exhaust made up to complete the downpipe. I won't be able to work on it tomorrow, but it should be back on the road Monday. Pics of the swap to come!

Pics time!

Broke the stupid tap off in the exhaust manifold and spent 2 hours grinding it out... :icon_evil

JB-WELD is awesome!

Beginning the swap: T04R still installed.

p1018955_6.jpg

No more T04R.

p1018955_7.jpg

It's so dirty! :(

p1018955_8.jpg

The oil return line was leaking, so I have some extra cleaning to do.

p1018955_9.jpg

Only the best from Toyota!

p1018955_10.jpg

Had to yank the stock chacoal canister as it would interfere with the rear turbo.

p1018955_11.jpg

Looks like I need to do some pounding... :(

Used a shorter stud laying around that wouldn't interfere with the EGT probe:

sm_photo_missing.jpg

Custom hard line to the rear turbo wastegate. It's ugly, but it gets the job done. You won't be able to see it when I'm done anyways.

p1018967_1.jpg

Heat shield installed, freshly mainted with new hardware that won't rust and seize.

p1018967_2.jpg

Cutout for the EGT probe.

p1018967_3.jpg

Hmmm, see how clean it is?

p1018967_3.jpg

And this is how: Etching mag cleaner. Dissolves the stained outer layer and removes corrosion and oxidation.

p1018967_5.jpg

Here's the rear turbo outlet pipe, all clean with the guts removed. I drilled out the hole and plugged it with a 1/2" freeze plug. I don't have pics but I used the same method and the same 1/2" plugs on the exhaust y-pipe.

p1018967_6.jpg

p1018967_8.jpg

And this is why I had to do a little grinding:

p1018967_9.jpg

All pipes cleaned and installed. It's coming together!

p1018967_10.jpg

And there you have it!

It needs caps for the stock bypass valve and an ISC hose and the intake side is done. The downpipe is getting made this evening, and it should be back on the road!

Wow!! Clean and simple just my cup of tea. Also thank you for the heads up on Eagle One Etching mag cleaner. I'm always worried about buying "snake oil" when it comes to cleaners but that stuff looks like it works great. I'm going to pick up a bottle after work today.

for some reason, I like the look of the stock twins if its installed in the 7m. Looks a lot better.
Nice work C.

Thanks! But, when have you seen JZ twins on a 7M? Link?

Yes, much more simple than the stock sequential twin-turbo setup. I just hope that doesn't kill me when I get the visual inspection done. As far as I know, the smog guys only check for emissions vacuum routing and as long as the rest looks legit then they won't bother with it.

Yes, that's the Eagle One cleaner. I forgot to mention that, but apparently you know the one I'm talking about. :)

ST springs arrived today. Maybe putting them on tomorrow? :D

I think I worded it wrong here . :biglaugh: . meant to say a stock 2jz with twins in a MKIII looks better to me compared to a single turboed one. I tend to use 7ms and MKIIIs interchangeably :aigo:.
Just like this guys :)

I agree. Twins with all the stock plumbing, heat shields, and other factory stuff look very clean, high-tech, and sophisticated, which is neat because so was the MKIII in it's age. They just seem to fit well together. Single setups seem to always have one or two points that are obviously not stock and, while not neccessarily tacky, definately out of place and awkward. Yeah, my single setup was nice, but the tubular manifold and massive intake pipe were out of place and stuck out like a sore thumb. That being said, I wouldn't mind having this under my hood:

567492870_909da1166f_o.jpg

However since I'm obviously not made of money and my goals lead me in a different direction, that won't be happening. Unless of course I win the lottery and can afford a turbo that large that still spools as fast as stock twins. :)

Speaking of spool, I drove the car tonight and at the max of 15psi that I hit tonight, it pulled hard! However, due to a exhaust leak, the rear turbo doesn't really spool until around 5K rpms, so everything is coming back apart! :3d_frown: It's hard to judge because it's so different, but my ass dyno wants to say that it pulled harder than my previous setup at 14psi which isn't bad for these little turbos. Once I've got both turbos spooling and can turn up the boost, it's going to be real fun. I'm looking forward to dynoing it.

Update!!

I work too much... so I've finally got it almost back together. I'll be starting it in the morning and checking for any leaks. If it's all good now, then I'll be done.

Also, a note: DO NOT USE FREEZE PLUGS TO FILL THE HOLES IN THE Y-PIPE! Mine blew back out, so I took a piece of exhaust pipe and made a tapered sleeve that I pressed into the inside of the ceramic valve body and threw some JB weld inside the holes just to be safe. If that doesn't do it, then I don't know what will. ;)

Updates when I've had a chance to play with it!

EGT probe came loose... Now I have to pull everything else apart again and come up with another way to stick it in there... Updates in a week or so.

Hmmm.... Looks like I forgot to update my own thread. My bad. Work and other aspects of life have been keeping me very busy...

Anyways, I pulled everything back apart to get the EGT bung properly welded in and everything has been perfect since. The new setup is responsive at low rpms yet still hits as hard as the TO4R did when jumping into the throttle at higher speeds. I've only had the boost to 12psi so far without hitting fuel cut, but I couldn't be happier. Once it's tuned and I can up the boost I can only imagine what it will be like.

I finally got this boat lowered with some ST springs that I picked up for a great price from a member. (Thanks GrimJack!) Coupled with my very healthy TEMS struts and good tires, the handling is incredible. This is the first MKIII I have driven with such fresh suspension components thanks to the lower mileage. It makes a huge difference over my previous, more weathered Supras. I thought that I wouldn't want to keep the stock shocks, but again with lower mileage units, the feel is amazing, very solid with no extra bounce or give.

The car is currently back under the knife getting a few things done that I have been neglecting since getting it on the road with the swap. I feel like I'm finally finishing the swap. It's also getting the A/C reinstalled. I love having a parts car. :)

Between the performance of the engine/turbo setup, the perfect blend of comfort and performance in the suspension, the natural luxury sportscar feel of the interior, and the return of creature comforts like A/C, this car is well on its way to being the track ready, traffic friendly, canyon carving, highway beast that I want it to be.

Next on the list: enough tire that I can use the power I'm making even at this point, some means of tuning (I haven't decided what I'm using yet. Suggestions?), ST swaybars and poly bushings, an Autopower "race roll bar", and last but not least, a good paint job so I can feel comfortable taking the car out in public. :D

More updates to come...
