Ok so i'll introduce the car. 1988 turbo targa 5spd, burgundy outside and interior (leather), 170k miles (two owners), all original. headgasket was replaced by a shop are 128k miles (with fiber oem type).

p483531_1.jpg

plans for the near future:
get the car running well and bump the power up a bit, use it as a drift car for events like justdrift at willow springs.

sitting in the back of the car right now waiting for me to install:
tokico illumina II struts, h&r springs, suspension techniques sways, tanabe hyper medallion catback, hks downpipe, greddy type-s BOV, aluminum ic hardpipes.

at the moment the car is throwing codes 41 and 52, so i have a replacement TPS that hopefully i can get installed on the car today along with the springs, struts, and sways. picking up the stock 17" wheels that used to come on the 350z (7 spoke silver) for 300 bucks to use as track wheels until 5zigen ships out more FN01r-c 17x9s (they are having production issues with that wheel right now). i'm running to the store to get jackstands and a few things today and i'll post pics once i get going on the suspension.

very excited about this project!

Sounds good, the only odd thing I see is that you are going with a spring a shock set up and you want to drift. Why now go coilovers? You are already spending so much money...

holy jebus i have come down with the worst cold ever. before the worst of it hit i got the front springs and struts installed. SO MUCH WORK. why the heck did they put the washer fluid tank in front of the FREAKING UPPER CONTROL ARM BOLT!?!?!??? i had to pull the fender liner and intake to get to the bolts to take the washer fluid tank out of the way to get the upper arm off. my knuckles are busted, i'm greasy, and sick as a dog.

but the front of my supra is sooo beyond slammed.

still need to replace the TPS asap, do the rear struts, install both sways. then gotta get to the smog place so i can get this thing registered. i honestly spent 9-10 hours working on the car today with no breaks. i thought i could do springs/struts/sways all around in under a day. i was sooooo wrong.

in other news:
the car is randomly dying when i let it "idle"(its still on open loop though), especially coming down from high revs like when i do some hard acceleration and then get off the throttle. trying to figure out if this would be due to the problem with the TPS and fact that the car is stuck in open loop.....also the CEL comes on occasionally for a second or two at a time, a few times. gonna try and get around to checking codes tomorrow. hoping its just the TPS, but preparing for the worst.

got a vacuum leak somewhere? I know my car won't like to idle if I got a hose off and it dies when you are running high rpms then let off the throttle. I don't doubt that you've already looked into this, but just though I should bring it up just incase. Good luck, will like to see the updates.

Also I would recommend coilovers if you can. Definately be worth it for drifting.

yeah, regarding coilovers: i definitely plan to do it eventually, but i decided to get a nice spring and strut setup for now to try out the whole deal and see if this is the car for me. right now the individual parts i got could be resold relatively easily on the forums if it turns out i hate drifting the supra.

big day! flu is almost gone so i was able to get up to driftmotion today. bigg plug for aaron and jose. if you are within reasonable distance of these guys, i highly recommend taking your car there. they installed and calibrated my new TPS, fixed a busted coupler between the intake mani and 3000 pipe, replaced some of the PCV hoses, fixed timing, and put up with my zillion questions throughout the whole thing. not to mention they charge very reasonably. 45 minute's drive for me and it's so worth it.

the car runs great, is finally hitting full boost, idles properly and DOESNT RANDOMLY DIE. :wiggle: now i gotta get the soup down to the smog station so i can stop freaking out everytime a cop gets behind me. driving an unregistered car (i'm using my DD for now, just that the supra has to get driven occasionally) is more stressful than you would think.

big ups to aaron and jose at driftmotion. :burnout:

update!

it's my 18th birthday today, so i took the day off from school to install the stock airbox and get the supra smogged. passed! took and registered it (in my own name! i'm an adult!). took it up to 128mph to test out everything. it's boosting fully still and sounds great. going to get new pics on here when i get the downpipe / test pipe / catback on. once intake and exhaust are done, going to maybe get a new driver's seat, steering wheel, and shifter. don't want to start pushing the limits of the engine just yet.

mods to come soon:
3" catless from teh turbo back (have all the parts, just got to install)
suspension techniques sways (have, need to install)
new seat(s) (either driver's or both fronts - we'll see)
steering wheel
shift knob
5zigen FN01r-c 17x8 or 17x9 whenever i can find a set
WEIGHT REDUCTION FOR MY TUBBY SUPRA <-important

i pulled the intake and accordion pipe to replace both, and i look at the turbo thinking i should check for shaft play.

THE COMPRESSOR WHEEL IS CHIPPED :(

turbochip.jpg

what do i do and what effect is this having on my turbo / engine right now? i'm thinking that being off b alance at a billion rpms like that wheel does could be tearing the turbo up right now...do i need a rebuild, or a whole new ct26? hellpp

you could just do a rebuild, mdc does them, or since your want to drift this thing you gonna need some more power, and something that spools quick, so just upgrade it to a 57 trim ct.

-my compressor wheel is chipped
-i'm leaking exhaust like mad off the back end of the manifold
-the car overheats badly when idling
-i have rod knock
-i dont get 6psi boost unless im going at least 80mph

the solution? i'm going 1j. end of story.
