This whole argument is like the old DVD+R/DVD-R. Which format is going to be superior in the end?Neither, both of them still exist, i have dvd+/- r's still. So I wouldnt expect anything less from either of these two formats. Ill just wait for the combination drive down the road that will support hd-dvd and blueray, just like the burners rom drives had to do. Untill then ill enjoy my lossless hd-dvd/blu-ray rips online :)

Ok not to start anything else, from personal experience(mainly xbox burning) dvd-r worked best for me. +r on the xbox Never worked lol. Anything besides the xbox(especially now days) +/- is the same, but I go with -r tayo uden still.

Im curious how big the rips are?

Ive burned some regular dvd to +r's, they play on my xbox flawlessly. I believe theres a secret update u have to get, mine update along time ago when i was trying to stream videos from my pc.

Well the rips vary from length of movie and quality of rip. For example; Live free or Die Hard (720p) is only 4.3 gigs or so, just enough to fit on a dvd-r. Now transformers the same (720p) rip is 6.5 gigs. The quality is superb, after watchin one of these rips and the a hq reg. dvd rip, it makes the dvd rip look terrible.

Now true HD(1080p) is plain ridiculous. On average ill say there anywhere from 17 gigs to 28 gigs. I havent touched one there yet for obvious reasons. Watching HD movies on your pc is demanding so you processor, video, card and codecs have to be up to date

There was also what 3 different dvd drives shipped in the xbox. That played a huge role too from what I remember. Some wouldnt play cdr but play cdrw fine. I just know -r worked on all xboxs I tried with no issues, just burn and go for me.

28gigs is a bit much but its worth it over 720, at least on my 60" inch tv i need 1080 ha.

Oh really this xbox is only 3-4 months old so its probobly one of the newer better drives, even tho i get unreadable disk all the time:3d_frown:

I only have a smaller 26inch 1080i capatable tv, i dont know how it would work if i tryed to play a true HD movie. From my readings ive done about the rips, its actually more demanding on your system to play a 720p than a 1080p, because the 720 is compressed and the 1080 is essentially a raw file. I may give it a try when i can find file thats reasonable in size like around 10 gigs

I forget about the xbox, go to xbox-scene.com they list all the different hardware types and what they like to play. It wasnt a case of better/worse it was just different brand drives liking certain formats. I doubt they ever changed from the original drives either. You should try some dvd -r and see how it works, was the cure for me. Also burning at 2x made them much more xbox friendly.

All this means to me is I scoop up all the clearance HDdvds for dirt cheap. Then, get a denon blu player at cost and continue watching movies(not like my tv doesnt have enough inputs for it).

I still stand by HDdvd being my personal choice, theres No clear technically superior format. No matter how many web sites you read about it lol.

Maybe when people realize all the ps3 users arent buying movies left and right like they expect, things will change. Out of my group of friends, people with ps3s own 1-2 movies. The rest with HDdvd stand alone players own piles of movies.

Im sure the sub-$400 bluray burner will help those movie sales also....

This is just....I cant believe what i just read.

1) If you cant see that Bluray is technically superior to HD-DVD then I feel sorry for you. There is NOTHING that HD-DVD does better then Bluray and Bluray does a LOT better then HD-DVD.

2) People who have PS3's OWN BLURAYS..... I myself own about 40 of them and my player is my PS3.

3) You can keep your HD-DVD movies and player cause obviously they will still work. Just dont expect any new releases for that player after 2008. HD-DVD is done.

How does a media format make a movie technically better? Its all about what its encoded with not the disc. When it comes down to one having slightly more storage space is a moot point. Hddvd is cheap enough the extras can be on a seperate disc so what?

Educate me then since obviously I dont know anything. What does Blu do so well to enhance my movie experience?
Dont mention 1080p because its a non-issue in this market place.
Dont mention space, as above its not an inssue.
Ps3 is a non issue as not everyone wants a game box as their movie player.
Why were early blu movies encoded with mpeg2?
How come early blu players arent updateable to handle new features making them useless with new/future movies.
Whats the gain to you(me) as consumers to have a single format media?
With no competition to drive content up and prices down who really wins?

More over, how can any true movie watcher take a video game console serious as their movie gateway.

Its obvious to me you A) dont have a PS3, and B) dont have the capabilities to take advantage of everything bluray has to offer.

First of all space isnt an issue? Really? Thats funny when HD-DVDs are too small to fit a movie that is 3 hours on one disc (Alexander). Its also funny because Id rather have the one that has enough space to have BOTH HD audio AND video and not some half assed version of either or both so that it fits.

You want to know why some Blurays are mpeg2? Mainly because when Blurays started coming out there were a lot of studios doing BOTH Bluray and HD-DVD.... So the studios encoded to the inferior HD-DVD with the stuff that would FIT on HD-DVD then simply ported it over to the Bluray disc. Now this doesnt explain a few movies that are mpeg2 however they are pretty much non existent now that the 50GB dual layers are available.

As for your player issue... EVERY player is firmware upgradeable.... perfect example of that is the PS3 just getting the firmware upgrade to make it a 1.1 profile Bluray player and able to use the PIP function et al.

As for 1080p. OF COURSE ITS AN ISSUE...thats why you would get EITHER Bluray or HD-DVD. If you have a home theatre setup that has a 1080p set and its bigger then about 46" and you arent sitting more then 8-9ft away (which by the way is probably over half of the people who BUY these HDM players etc) you can definitley tell and appreciate the difference between 720p(1080i) and 1080P.

Whats to gain from a single format? Simple... EVERY MOVIE on one format... just like DVDs..... prices WILL come down just like DVDs did.

Here go here:

Watch some of the videos and youll see just how superior Bluray is technically then HD-DVD.

I think I will stick with my DVDs for now and buy a player that plays all 3 formats for less than $200 in a year or two. People who buy things when they first come out are just like people who buy new cars....BROKE LOL!!!:biglaugh:

yep...like i said.... and now hd-dvd is pretty much officially DEAD.

warner going exclusive means new line going exclusive... which leaves ONLY paramount and universal as hd-dvd makers.... and i expect universal to go bluray exclusive VERY soon...and paramount as soon as their bribe money contract is done with.

this is pretty much the move that will have bluray win this format war... and good thing too cause now all of the movies will be on bluray like they should. I just hope they redo the paramount and universal and dreamworks movies to make them better since they have the room on the bluray disk for better sound and picture TOGETHER.

and for the record... im not a "fanboy" of bluray OR sony...

i just do my research and understand that bluray is COMPLETELY superior to hd-dvd in every facet... and the ONLY people thgat bought hd-dvd are the ones who didnt research before making a purchase, were tricked into it, or had enougn money to support both formats and players....

here let me clue you in on the business that is toshiba.

Thier market cap is 43 billion dollars and is going to grow by a huge amount this year, no thanks in part to thier aquisition of U.K's Westinghouse.

Toshiba has not lost ANY money in ANY of thier division in the last three years (Going back from the HDDVD introduction).

SO that means that HDDVD to them is PROFITABLE. Has always been. So if they have x market share and are making a profit. Why exactly should they fold HDDVD?

lets see....when there are NO STUDIOS BACKING IT MAYBE? OR HOW ABOUT WHEN NO MAJOR RETAILERS WILL STOCK IT?

I REALLY think you are a closet HD-DVD fanboy as you like to call me.

Bluray sold more standalone players then HD-DVD standalone players... NOT EVEN COUNTING PS3s... there are only TWO major studios left supporting HD-DVD (3 if you include dreamworks). Universal has no known ties to HD-DVD and will more then likely at the LEAST go neutral. Paramount has their bribe contract BUT they have escape clauses that reserves the right for them to go back to Bluray.

Warner Brothers is the BIGGEST movie studio in hollywood movie wise... they also have the BIGGEST movie catalog in hollywood.... them go blu exclusive pretty much ends HD-DVD.
