hey Scott,
It was good to see you yesterday. We live within 3 miles of each other and never get a chance to meet because we are always workin on a car. I was happy to be working on my supra, I mean the wife's, for a change instead of the Talon. :biglaugh:
Your car rides sweet, but the only way I know to describe the performance problem to everyone is that something it holding it back, like you said. It wants to go, but something will not let it! Maybe it is in the driveline since this engine was perfectly fine in the grey ghost.
When we were launching up that hill yesterday, it was like the car was trying to pull a 4 ton load. It did not want to go. Something sucked the power out of it.
Jim

Jim, I'm gonna make a video on that hill today, if draining my extra fluid has no effect. somehow, I don't believe the fluid is the problem. The guy at the transmission shop said it shouldn't be the problem. Regardless, I am going to drain that excess.

I'm just an N/A guy right now, but I would guess a timing advance issue, wastegate, a vacuum leak, or crossed vacuum lines.
Good luck Scott.

Dave, There's something I haven't checked. I know they aren't leaking, but I haven't verified the locations of them all. I'll try to do that today as well. It's so damn humid right now though. I drank 2 large glasses of water yesterday during the compression check, and still thought I'd have a heat stroke. We'll see how far I get today.

Hey Scott! I'm a little confused what you have going on here but it doesn't sound like driveline, otherwise it would not be ok on coast, it would would drag like the brakes were on when you let off too. If the trans is overfull, it's as simple as pulling the fill plug and putting it back in when the excess drains.

Forgive me if I missed it but do the rpms come up high trying to pull, but no torque, like the clutch is slipping or the slave is hanging up??

It kind of sounds like a problem I had when I first got mine...the fuel tank was rusting on the inside, so it was full of rust the consistency of sand in the bottom and plugging up the sock. It idled and revved up fine, but when I got it loaded up making a pull....it was a dog.

Ken, The coasting I spoke of is OUT OF GEAR, so with driveline relieved. On taking off, the RPM's drag way down. It's not like the clutch is slipping at all. I will smell clutch occasionally if I romp on it trying to take off quickly.

When I did the Walbro, my tank was very clean. There was almost nothing at all in the tank, or on the filter. I was really surprised at that.

What pressure plate are you running Scott? I'm not sure your clutch would go in backwards, but I don't know what the Centerforce clutch looks like. The Act sprung clutch won't go in backwards I dont believe because the springs make it stick out too far. I hope someone comes on here and figures this out for you. I commend you on your intestinal fortitude..........

It's the Centerforce pressure plate as well as disc. It's a dual friction clutch, so I sometimes wonder if it doesn't matter which way it goes. It's beeen a good while since I installed it, and I can't remember any pics I have of it.

Today, I put my upper IC pipe back on. While doing that, I also replaced the untrusted clamp on the small coupler at the throttle body. It held fine in the boost leak test, but I'm not sure if it always held. Then, I tightened down the spring in my BOV to see if maybe the increased flow was being released due to the light setting.

After doing all this, I tried to drive the car for a test. The first thing I noticed may be a clue. Right after Noah and I timed the car and replaced plugs, AND this time when I just cleaned plugs, I realized a new very pronounced miss, and the car ran much worse. I think the problem could be in my plug wires or coil pack. How do you go about keeping the plug wires separated with our crazy set up. It might all be caused by wires running all over each other under the coil pack. I'm gonna swap wires, and see if I can keep them off of each other a little better. So, I doubt I will be getting the car on any stands today. I'll be back to cool off again in a little while.

Over the weekend, I bought a new Actron Multimeter and auto diagnostic machine. It was $50, and I recommend everyone that doesn't have at least a Multimeter go get one. This thing came with a thick book, which illustrates how to test almost everything on an automobile. With that and some printed TSRM pages from cygnus, I have been using my free time to work on the car.

At lunch, I went and got something to eat, came back and ate, and had 30 mins left, so I pulled all 6 plug wires (hot motor), and proceeded to follow the book on how to check my wires. My NGK's all passed the test but were at the low end of the scale on resistance. I assume because they were hot. Then at 3, I got a 15 min break, and went after the coil pack next. I first checked the coil with plugs 1 and 5. It was getting 12 volts, but the resistance spec is .3 to .5, and it measured .6. That's out of spec, but again could be due to heat, so I will check it again later. From there, I decided with little time, I would try to crank the car with 1 and 5 still disconnected. It ran just like it did with them connected. I then hooked those two wires back up, and pulled the next two wires, and the car ran the same like that. Then, when I pulled the last two, leaving 4 hooked, the car would not start at all. I think I may be running on 1 good coil!!!!!!!!!!! That is how it has been running since this weekend anyway.

Thanks Dave!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm bumming a ride for lunch today to cut down on any driving I don't HAVE to do. I re-tested today after the car had been sitting for a couple of hours. I have 1 dead coil, 1 good coil, and 1 erratic coil. It does not run very good at all now.

Hints were posted in a couple of other well known builds.

Alright Quagmire whats the word!?!?!? New coils do the trick?

We have a winner!!!!

The set of coils I got from Dave, had one bad coil, so they didn't immediately do the trick. But, with my 1 good coil and Dave's 2 good coils, I brought the car to life last night. It wasn't until this morning that I got to try it out, but that was the problem all along. The car is now running about as good as the grey car ran, but not quite. A good tune, and it should be fine though. I now feel my boost, but am scared to really get into it before I know for sure I have a safe tune. It still breaks up a little when I get in it. I don't know if that is caused by flooding it, or if it is too lean. There is no black smoke, so I'm guessing lean, and I upped the fuel a little to be safe.

I can't concentrate on anything today I'm so excited. I just went to lunch, and so far, I'm still not getting anything more than stock boost........but just once, it hit so hard, I could tell it wanted more. It felt SOOOOOO good.

awesome news sir! Its wierd how coils seem to go bad sitting around. I had the same problem with Lucy and the set of coils I got from a guy in TX had 2/3 good as well.

If you ever make it over here to the mainland, and come to the south to visit Jake or Jay as promised.......I will bring my cat Chloe, and we should be able to get a live recreation.:naughty::biglaugh::aigo::evil2::icon_bigg

good scott, now you just need to set your fuel pressure and start tuning i guess:icon_razz

You are in my head Noah!

But, first things first. My wideband has never worked since I got it installed. Jayson says it sounds like a bad sensor, so I have to fix that first. Until then, I really can't run it too hard. It's one thing after another with this car, but I keep knocking them out and learning along the way. That's a pain, but I'm really happy with all that I have learned with this one. It will get there, just slowly. Until then, I have a good running, great riding car with a few issues left.
