I think I figured out your problem. You said "plenty of RTV on those spots". You're only suppose to put a small bead across the two areas and smooth it with your finger. If you put too much it can acually keep the HG from laying flat across there. If that is the case IDK short of doing it again...
#3 looks a little off. Maybe it's getting ready to really go. They should all be pretty close as far as compression. Did you check the little rubber cap under the #6 Exhaust outlet?
First off is it a Supra? There are no POS with the Supra badge. Maybe a poorly maintained, or one that has been butchered by some previous owners.

I have the Walbro with the 12 volt mod and no "J" tube and the resistor bypassed. But I also have a AFPR. I think if you're going to run the bigger pump you should have a AFPR.

Gummed up with what? I've seen them gummed up with stuff from the oil not being ghanged enough or with cheap oil. I've also seen them gummed up with carbon desposits from cheap gas and not being maintained properly. Could have been both.
That's a pretty good trick to know :) I guess as long as you don't "flood" it the mist would steam off. And like Jdub said if you are worried about the water getting past the rings then you have other problems to worry about.
Yeah, same with me, they sure look nice polished, just wonder how long before they start looking bad again. I had mine somewhat polished and the started to loose luster. Put clear on them, that started to turn yellow, that's why mine is black now.
