Each unit won't be EXACTLY the same, but dam close. If a unit is VSR balanced, it won't matter if its not "exactly" clipped.

^ Correct. But - some people just put the jumper wire in "thinking" they are good to go. YOU MUST check that the CEL comes on first before adjusting timing.

Valve seals tend to smoke on startup and under long periods of idle. This sounds like rings or turbo. Check the shaft play....
