I have fixed my sender about 3 times but it always wears again. I imagine this is pretty typical. When it gets down to below 1/4 tank then it loses contact and reads empty and then I have to rely on the light. Is there any good known fix for this? Thanks

Well the problem there is that the bolt is on the "wrong" side of the baffle plate, so it will never make it to the drain hole as far as I know. It is killing me that I can't locate the bolt with the magnet. The magnet sounds like it comes out in the center of the rear of the pan about 1.5"...

Have you ruled out a problem with the alternator? Unfortunately my schematics are from the 86.5 and they changed the wiring some in 87 I think. For example I have no CEL. I know on the 86.5 a bad alternator would light 3 different lights for some reason that I never understood. mpo

I think that baffle is in the way. That is the problem. Otherwise I would agree with you 100%

That is an interesting magnet idea. I am not sure how that would work through the steel pan. If it was an aluminum pan than I would say it would definitely work. I think the steel pan will act as a magnetic "shield".
