Well figured I would post this up, since she isn't a member here (yet). We drove 3 hours from Lafayette to Chicago to pick up what I was lead to believe was a beat up 87 Turbo that was to become pretty much a parts car for my 5spd swap into my Cressida. Well we got up there and the wife fell in love with the car, telling me "you can have the 5spd stuff, BUT I get the car". So after waiting 3 hours for the tow truck driver to show up, and another 3 hour drive back home, here is the wife's new project car.

The car has some patches of rust that we will be trying to take care of. We believe the car has been hit once in the front, hence the black bumper and hood. The radiator core support is somewhat dinged up, the driver's side headlight will not close fully, the black bumper does not seem to fit very well (goes into the frame rails but the bolt holes don't line up very well). Also we need to replace the front driver's side targa bolt, as currently it has a nearly 4" long 14mm bolt in it, and will not bring the top all the way down to seal. The headlights will flip up when we flash the brights but not when the lights are turned on, and the passenger window doesn't roll all the way up (stops about 1/2" from the top)

Also we were told "the engine started knocking and then spilled all of the oil". Due to this we are ripping out the engine and transmission, going to go through the engine and see how stuff is stacking up and whatnot. She says she doesn't want the turbo, so I will be converting the car to an N/A using my Cressida's 7M-GE, I also have access to a N/A auto MKIII in a local junkyard to get the proper ECU and harness for the conversion, along with the MKIII y-pipe setup.

Well after getting up and taking a bunch of pictures (while I'm walking around the car in my pajamas), she decides that it's time to get the "dead" engine out of there. So armed with a decent amount of tools, and 1/2 the day, we start tearing apart the car.

At the end of the day, we were left with a couple of weird questions. First of all WTF is that capped off coolant line below the exhaust manifold? Why is the OIL in the intake system? And WTF is that cottage cheese looking crap in the plug valley? BUT the cams and such look to be in pretty good shape, will be pulling the head after we get the engine out to check out the head for damage, then flipping the engine and checking out the bearings for scoring. I don't know about the "spilling all the oil out" that the seller told me, as the engine was less than 1/2 quart low on oil, and we haven't noticed any oil leaks under the car. Will know more when the engine is out and we can get a better look around the engine.

When weather lets up some, we'll pull the supra back out and get back to work on it, hopefully I can get the 2 stripped bolts out of the tranny mount and get the rest of the engine out of the car, then start tearing out the interior to better guage where rust is.

The capped off coolant line is on every USDM Supra. It's used as a heater core hose on RHD models. The cottage cheese looking crap is probably corrosion or leaves that have seen better days. I can't really tell from the pics.

The cams look fantastic, but the lobes usually do. It's the journals that you've gotta watch out for. ;) When you pull the cam caps, you'll see if they're truly in great shape.

The oil in the intake is probably from the PCV system. You might want to really look into that. Check that turbo, too. Looks like a pretty decent score!

Can you get a shot of the wheel in that turbo? It almost looks like it's milled out or something...

The "cottage cheese" stuff is probably decomposing acorns and chipmonk piss... I'm pretty familiar with the rodents hanging out in that valley and snacking away!

Good eye. It does look like the housing has been bored out. :)

Providing weather is decent tomorrow afternoon, I'll roll the car back out and get some more pictures. We found with all the rain we're having that the passenger window and targa are both letting water into the cabin, so we dropped it off the stands and quickly moved around stuff in the garage and crammed it in there. I will get a picture of the impeller for the turbo, also pull the plugs and get a picture of those and try to get the damned engine + tranny out so I can inspect stuff.

Today was mainly relaxing/cleaning/home stuff, I did however get the top off again and stored in the hatch and taught the wife how to remove the targa and use the holders in the back. Also got the trim peice off in front of the targa so I can replace the missing bolt + spring.

Pretty sure I mentioned up top, she doesn't WANT the turbo, so she'll be going N/A out of my mx83 Cressida. I don't think she's ever driven a boosted vehicle, so she's a little scared of the excess power, and since the way she drives her 140hp mazda 626 (weighs more than a MKIII with less power), I would just as soon she NOT have too much power in this, or I'll be fixing it again 2 days after it gets on the road.

I got told last night, that I am not allowed to work on the car while she's at work, and that I am manning the camera next to get some pictures of HER working on the car, instead of me doing 90% of the work. Just checked the weather, and it looks like it's going to rain again tomorrow, so more work will probably be delayed on her car, as my garage is getting very very cramped with parts for 3 vehicles + 1 car in the 1 car garage.

Crisp, since it's like 50 degrees outside, there will be no tight t-s and water being mixed, I don't feel like dealing with her being sick.

Push, I wasn't expecting to be up there for 3 hours, I tried to get Tony to give me his number do a little mini-meet, and kama said he was busy that day, didn't know how to get ahold of your x8 selling ass.

Cmdeoro, I grew up in Florida too, so you're not far from being like me, just give up all the sun and fun for cold winters and snow and rust and boredom and corn.....Screw this, I'm going back to florida lol.

so your gunna turbo the cressida and then the wife gets the na?

I have a 2jzge out of a GS300 that I'm rebuilding for my Cressida, and stealing her R154 for the conversion in my car, then she gets my 7mge for the time being until she either blows it up or decides she wants more power, or knowing her, both.

ENGINE IS OUT! And the block is dead, big old hole in the side at cylinder 6, rod about 90% out, I'm sure if I tried to I could pull it out the side of the engine. Looks like I'll have be having a "For Sale" thread here soon, selling off some of the parts from the turbo engine, but I think I'll use some of the GTE electronics on my 2jzge-t project. I'll get some pictures of "Day 2" up here in a little while after dinner and a little relaxing.

Couple small questions for you supra gurus. First of all, why does the headlights only pop up when we flash the brights, not when we turn the knob to on? Anyone have any clue why the passenger window stops about 1/2" from the top of the track? Does anyone have the part number for the little interior colored grommet for the targa top bolts?
